Somerset, NJ - Tyler Sanfillippo of the Wagner baseball team has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
For the junior first baseman, this week's honor marks the first time in his Seahawk career that he has earned a weekly citation from the conference. Additionally, this marks the second straight week that a member of the Seahawk baseball program has collected a weekly honor, as senior left-hander,
Neil Abbatiello, garnered Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 2.
The Wayne, NJ native raised his batting average by 48 points last week, collecting at least one hit and one RBI in each of the Green & White's four games. The Garden State product reached base safely at least twice in every contest.
Over the four-game span, the former Seton Hall Prep product batted .429 (6-for-14) with two doubles, four walks and a league-high seven RBIs. He also spearheaded the Wagner offense in propelling the Seahawks in taking two-of-three from Sacred Heart over the weekend, reaching base a total of eight times and scoring at least one run in all three games.
The right-handed hitter produced a RBI single to give the Seahawks a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning of the series opener and he also played a part in the team's ninth-inning, game-winning rally.
With Wagner facing a 4-3 deficit and down to its final three outs, Sanfillippo worked out a walk and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run on a bases-clearing double by senior
Anthony Pecora.
Sanfillippo delivered a two-run double of his own in the ninth inning of Game 2, cutting SHU's lead down to 11-8. The 5-foot-10 slugger opened the scoring in the fourth frame of the series finale. Stepping to the plate with one out and the bags juiced, Sanfillippo belted a double to left field to send the Pioneers on their way to a 5-4 win.
In addition to Sanfillippo being named Player of the Week, junior right-hander
McCae Allen was tabbed to the league's #NECPrimePerformer List.
In the series finale at Sacred Heart, in which Wagner went on to win, 5-4, Allen was dominant against the Pioneers. Making his sixth start of the year, he worked a sharp six innings, allowing just one unearned run on five hits, while issuing three walks and striking out a career-high seven in earning his second victory of the season.
Allen didn't allow an extra-base over his six frames of work, with the lone run coming into score after moving up to second on a passed ball. The Wichita, KS native retired SHU in order in four of the six frames that he lasted (1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th), while striking out the side in the fourth.
Over his last five starts, Allen has posted a 2-2 record with a 2.57 ERA in 21.0 innings of work. He has struck out 21 batters while the Seahawks have went 3-2 in that span.
Sanfillippo, Allen and the rest of the Seahawks embark on a four-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday evening at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark as the Seahawks host Rider with first-pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
