Baseball | 3/19/19

Somerset, NJ –The Wagner baseball team swept all three weekly Northeast Conference (NEC) honors as senior shortstop Anthony Pecora (Player of the Week), junior right hander, McCae Allen (Pitcher of the Week), and freshman left-handed pitcher John LaPointe (Co-Rookie of the Week) were all recognized by the league it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

With today's announcement, this marks the third time in program history that Wagner has had players home honors in all three weekly categories. Back on May 22, 2017, former Seahawk outfielder, Anthony Godino (Player of the Week), current left-hander Neil Abbatiello (Pitcher), and junior Freddy Sabdio (Rookie) each garnered weekly honors from the league.

Pecora helped propel Wagner to three wins in four games last week. The veteran infielder reached base safely eight times, including four extra-base hits, and drove in six runs. As Wagner opened conference play by taking two out of three from Mount St. Mary's as Pecora recorded two RBI in each of the Seahawks' three games against the Mountaineers.

The Mamaroneck, NY native reached safely three times during the middle game of the series, a 9-8 win for Wagner. Pecora delivered a one-out triple that plated a pair of sixth-inning runs and gave the Seahawks a 6-5 edge. The 6-foot-1 senior then went yard during the finale, launching a two-run bomb in the seventh inning of the 4-0 triumph. Pecora started the week by putting forth a three-hit performance against A-10 member Fordham. He led off the game with a double and came around to score the first run four batters into the eventual 3-2 victory.  For the week, Pecora batted .375 (6-for-16) with six RBI, four extra base hits, three runs scored and two walks.

Allen earns his honor after tossing 9.1 innings to the tune of an 0.96 earned-run average in two wins last week After pitching effectively in an abbreviated mid-week start at Fordham, Allen dazzled in his NEC debut. Taking the ball for Sunday's series finale, the 6-foot-4 right-hander blanked Mount St. Mary's for 6.2 frames en-route to a 4-0 victory. Allen, a first-year Seahawk from Wichita, KS scattered five singles and worked around four walks while fanning five Mountaineers.

He threw 104 pitches in the NEC start and departed the game with the Seahawks holding a 1-0 lead two outs in the seventh inning. Earlier in the week, Allen limited Fordham to one run on two hits over the first 3.0 innings in Wagner's 3-2 victory. In addition to his miniscule 0.96 ERA over those 9.1 innings, Allen struck out seven while allowing just seven hits.

LaPointe, a local product from nearby Monsignor Farrell HS here on Staten Island, picked up two wins while spinning 5.0 one-hit innings of relief. Taking over for starter Eric Ligda in the middle game of the three-game NEC series against Mount St. Mary's, the first-year Seahawk twirled 3.0 no-hit frames. He limited the Mount to one unearned run during his 46-pitch outing and handed a 9-6 lead to closer Nick Robino.

In Wagner's mid-week victory over Fordham, LaPointe replaced starter McCae Allen and proceeded to complete a pair of scoreless frames. He totaled four strikeouts over the two appearances out of the bullpen in sharing NEC Rookie of the Week honors with
Justin Jordan of Sacred Heart.
