Staten Island, NY – After splitting its first two road games of the
Bill McCutcheon era, both in one-goal decisions, the Wagner men's lacrosse team is set to host Lafayette in its home opener on Friday, February 15 in a 4:00 p.m. faceoff at Hameline Field.
The Seahawks opened the 2019 campaign on February 2 with a thrilling 7-6 overtime win at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. One week later, on February 9, the Green & White took a much shorter trip to Riverdale, NY, where they dropped a hard-fought 11-10 decision to the Jaspers.
Through two games, Wagner is led in scoring by senior midfielder
Spencer Kaufman with six points on five goals, including the game-winner in OT at Bellarmine, and one assist. Senior attack
John Norton and senior midfielder
Matt Cechini are tied for the team lead in assists with two apiece.
Senior midfielder
Riley Owens has collected a team-high nine groundballs while there's a three-way tie for team leader in caused turnovers between Cechini, senior defender
Connor Davis, and sophomore defenseman
Kyle Stofko, each of whom have four CTs on the young season.
In goal, senior Matt Sefccik has an 8.33 goals against average and .624 save percentage, having allowed just 17 goals in the two games, while coming up with 27 saves.
The last two meetings between these schools have been one-goal games that went down to the wire. On February 16, 2018, Wagner dropped an 8-7, double-overtime affair in Easton, PA, while the previous season the Seahawks posted their first-ever win over the Leopards, a 9-8 victory on Staten Island.
Lafayette enters Friday's game sporting an identical 1-1 record as Wagner, having lost to No. 12 Rutgers 14-8 in the season opener on February 2 before bouncing back on February 9 with a 14-10 home win over NJIT.
