Newark, NJ – The Wagner College men's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit, as the Seahawks dropped an 88-69 decision to NJIT on Saturday at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 1-3 on the year, while the Highlanders even their record at 2-2.
Coming off a historic 40-point performance in Wagner's win over Wesley on Tuesday, graduate student
Curtis Cobb III once again led the way with 17 points, including three baskets from long range.
Sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV added 14 points on 5-10 shooting from the field, while graduate student
Patrick Szpir added ten points.
Junior
Will Martinez finished with a team-high seven assists along with eight points.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 16-4 run to open the game and forced Wagner to call an early timeout. Wagner answered with a 10-2 run of its own and got within 6 points at 18-14 on a layup by Szpir with 10:40 to play in the first half.
That is as close as the Seahawks would get, however, as NJIT increased its lead and took a 37-23 advantage into the halftime locker room.
Wagner scored 46 of its 69 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as NJIT finished the night shooting 28-55 (50.5%) to earn the victory. NJIT's Zach Cooks led all scorers with 21 points.
The Highlanders had a slight 34-31 advantage on the glass and received 36 points from their bench.
Next up, Wagner will travel to Saint Peter's on Wednesday, November 20. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Peacocks is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
