Staten Island, NY – Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III led the way with 40 points as the Seahawk men's basketball team earned its first victory of the season in a 97-67 victory over Wesley on Tuesday night on Grymes Hill.
Cobb's performance marked the most points ever scored by a Wagner player at the Spiro Sports Center, beating Marcus Burton's 38 points from January 5, 2015 against Mount St. Mary's. The graduate student's performance also resulted in the 10
th 40-point game in Wagner history, while his 10 made three-pointers fell one short of tying the school record set by Joey Mundweiler at Monmouth on February 28, 2009.
Overall, Cobb finished 10-15 from long range and 13-22 from the field, with 22 of his points coming in the first half. As a team, the Seahawks' 18 three-pointers set a new school record, beating the previous mark of 16.
Junior
Will Martinez was second on the team with 20 points, while fellow junior
Alex Morales added 15 points and a team-high eight assists. Sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV led the way with eight rebounds on the night.
Cobb scored early and often, as the Seahawks opened up a 23-10 lead midway through the first half. Another offensive outburst to close the first half then gave Wagner a comfortable 50-28 lead over the Wolverines, who fall to 0-2 on the year.
The second half featured more offense, as Wagner shot 18-35 from downtown (51.4%) throughout the game and outscored the Wolverines 47-39 in the second period.
Wesley was led by Brian Cameron's 17 points, while adding 26 points from its bench, while the still shorthanded Seahawks only used seven players throughout the game.
Next up, Wagner travels to local foe NJIT on Saturday, with tip-off set for 2 pm.
