Lawrenceville, NJ  – The Wagner baseball team will look to add to its eight-game winning streak when the Seahawks kick off the first of five road games by taking on the Rider University Broncs on Wednesday.

ALL-TIME AGAINST RIDER:
  • Wagner and Rider are meeting for the 21st time in program history with the Broncs leading the all-time series, 15-5.
  • Last season, at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, NJ, the Seahawks knocked off Rider, 14-7.
  • Five Seahawks had two or more hits in this contest, led by Anthony Godino, who went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and drove in two RBIs. Phil Capra went 3-for-5 with a team-best three RBIs.
  • Sean Mazzio, Kyle Cala and Joe Silvestrone each had two hits while combining to score five runs with Silvestrone crossing the plate thrice.

PIRROTTA FOURTH SEAHAWK TO EARN NEC WEEKLY HONORS:
  • Wagner freshman Mike Pirrotta was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
  • For Pirrotta, this makes the first time in his young Seahawk career that he has garnered a weekly award from the NEC. The neophyte reliever is the first Wagner pitcher to receive the award this season and first since teammate, Neil Abbatiello garnered Pitcher of the Week honors back on May 22, 2017.
  • Additionally, the Howell, NJ native is the fourth Seahawk this season to capture a weekly honor, joining sophomore designated hitter, Freddy Sabido, who was tabbed NEC Player of the Week last week (April 2), along with senior outfielder, Anthony Godino (March 19) and junior catcher Phil Capra, who was named Co-Player of the Week back on March 12.
  • Pirrotta picked up a win and a save during a pair of appearances last week. Pitching to an 0.00 ERA, the rookie righty logged six innings of two-hit ball during his best two-game stretch yet. He fanned six batters, registering a trio of strikeouts in each of the outings.
  • The former Freehold Township standout was the starter in Wagner's 4-2 mid-week win over Big East member, Seton Hall. He surrendered a single and a walk in the first inning, but worked out of a one-out jam by inducing a flyout followed by a strikeout. He was charged with one unearned run in the second frame, but escaped further damage by fanning the Pirates' No. 3 hitter for the third out. He fired a 1-2-3 third inning and exited with a 4-1 lead.
  • Coming out of the bullpen to close out the series finale against Mount St. Mary's, the freshman allowed one base on balls over three innings of work to earn a save. Pirrotta retired the final five batters in a row to complete the four-game series sweep.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER (APRIL 7, 2018 - MOUNT ST. MARY'S 3, WAGNER 9 | GAME TWO | DOUBLEHEADER):
  • Trailing 3-1 after three innings of play, the Wagner baseball team rallied in the fourth inning with three runs to take a 4-3 lead that the Seahawks would never relinquish in defeating Mount St. Mary's, 9-3, to sweep the series on Sunday.
  • Senior 2B Nick Mascelli and junior 1B/C Phil Capra drove in a combined seven of the Seahawks' nine runs with Mascelli accounting for four while Capra added three. Senior RF Kyle Cala and sophomore designated hitter Freddy Sabido also drove in a run each.
  • Freshman Pat Gallagher, who made his fifth start of the season, went five innings in picking up his second win of the year (2-3). The Worcester, MA native gave up three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out one.
  • Sophomore Nick Zuppe, who missed the entire 2017 season, made his collegiate debut in the contest, throwing a scoreless inning of relief. Freshman RHP Mike Pirrotta relieved Zuppe, tossing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit, in picking up his first collegiate save.
  • The Mountaineers scored the game's first run in the first in taking the early lead. Myles Nicholson and Jared Urban reached on back-to-back singles. Patrick Causa reached on catcher's interference, which loaded the bases before Vaughn Parker II drew a six-pitch walk, scoring Nicholson.
  • Wagner responded in the bottom of the second as Mascelli doubled down the left field line in scoring freshman catcher Brandon Hall. The Mount answered with two more runs in the top of the third in taking a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Savastio laced a single up the middle, plating both Parker and Causa.
  • The Seahawks rallied in the bottom of the fourth, scoring thrice in taking a 4-3 lead. Cala led off the stanza with a walk. With two outs, junior 3B Anthony Pecora swung at a ball for strike three but reached first as the ball scurried away from Mount's Matthew Kephart.
  • Mascelli was the next batter and sent a Kennedy's 2-2 pitch over the left field, giving the Seahawks in the lead for good at 4-3. In the fifth, Sabido tripled to center field, scoring senior LF Anthony Godino, who reached after being hit by a pitch.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Mascelli led off with a single to left. Senior SS Sean Mazzio then doubled to left, moving Mascelli to third. Mount went to the bullpen in Jesse Archambault, who gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Capra.
  • The Seahawks capped off the win with three more tallies in the bottom of the seventh. Cala led off with a solo home run to left while Capra added two more RBIs as he singled through the left side in scoring both Mascelli and Pecora.

  • Collectively on the mound, Rider is pitching to a 6.68 combined ERA. Pete Soporowski leads the club with two wins and innings pitched with 37.1. Soporowski is the team's leader in strikeouts with 33.

COACH CARONE IN SECOND ON WAGNER'S ALL-TIME CAREER WINS LIST:
  • After leading his Seahawk club to its eighth straight win, which is one short of the Seahawks' season-high,  and a four-game sweep of fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, Mount St. Mary's, seventh-year head coach Jim Carone now owns possession of second place on the all-time Wagner wins list with 153 career victories.
