DeLand, FL – The Wagner baseball team concludes its six-day, five-game Florida road trip this evening as the Seahawks (3-7) square off against the Stetson University Hatters (9-1) from Melching Field.

ALL-TIME AGAINST STETSON:
  • The Seahawks and Hatters are squaring off for the first-time in program history.
  • All-time against current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN), Wagner is 12-16, last playing NJIT back on April 19, 2015, falling 4-1 in Newark but earned a 8-7 extra innings victory over the Highlanders the day before.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
  • Senior LF Anthony Godino and junior catcher Phil Capra connected on back-to-back first home runs in the first while erupting for four more in the top of the fifth. Virginia Tech scored 13 runs over the first three frames in picking up an 18-7 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Melching Field, the home of the Stetson University baseball team.
  • Godino and Capra combined to go 6-for-9 with three runs scored, four RBIs and two round-trippers with Capra accounting for three RBIs.
  • Senior infielders Nick Mascelli and Sean Mazzio each had a hit while sophomore designated hitter Freddy Sabido drove in two runs while going 1-for-5. Sophomore Tyler Sanfillippo recorded his first career hit in a Wagner uniform this afternoon.

ABOUT THE STETSON UNIVERSITY HATTERS:
  • Stetson is 9-1 on the season, after sweeping through the Westin Lake Mary Invitational.
  • The Hatters are 4-1 all-time against members from the Northeast Conference
  • Austin Hale is the team's leading hitter, batting .325 through the team's first ten games. Andrew MacNeil lead the Hatters in home runs (2) and RBI (8) while Jorge Arenas is the club's leader in doubles (3) and slugging percentage (.500).
  • On the bump, Joey Gonzalez (today's probable starter), along with Mitchell Senger and Logan Gilbert each have two wins on the season. Gonzalez has not given up an earned run in his two previous outings while holding batters to a .143 batting average.
  • Brooks Wilson is the team's closer, appearing in six games while posting five saves in 10.2 innings pitched.

CAPRA NAMED TO SECOND STRAIGHT JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST

  • The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has announced the official watch list for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award, presented by BaseballSavings.com.
  • Wagner junior catcher Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) is one of 97 catchers that was nominated for the award by their coaches.
  • Capra is one of four Northeast Conference (NEC) catchers named to the initial list, joining Cody Doyle of Sacred Heart, Nick Garland of Central Connecticut and Sean Kelly of Mount St. Mary's.
  • For Capra, it marks the second time he is a nominee, earning the distinction a season ago and joins former Seahawk catcher, Nick Dini ['15], who was nominated for the award back in 2014 & 2015. Dini enters his fourth season as a professional baseball player in the Kansas City Royals organization.
  • Through the first ten games of the 2018 season, the third-year Seahawk is batting a team-high .341 (14-for-41) with a team-leading three home runs and 14 RBIs, both of which lead the conference. He has posted an OPS of 1.006 over the first ten games, slugging a team-high .634.

WELCOME TO THE 200-HIT CLUB, NICK MASCELLI:
  • In the middle game of a three-game series at No. 23 ranked UCF, senior infielder Nick Mascelli etched his name into the Wagner record books, becoming just the tenth Seahawk all-time to reach the 200-hit plateau.
  • The Clifton, NJ native, who went 1-for-3 on Saturday, added a hit in the series finale, to now be in a tie for eighth all-time on the Seahawk career hits, joining Nick Papa and Chris Dick, who finished their careers with 201 hits.
  • 2015 NEC Player of the Year and current Kansas City Royal prospect, Nick Dini, is the all-time hits leader at 245.

NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • Wagner remains on the road but a bit closer to home as they travel to Stony Brook to take on the Seawolves in a three-game set, beginning on March 10.
  • The March 10 contest is slated for a doubleheader, with a 12:00 p.m. first-pitch while the series concludes on Sunday, March 11, at 12:00 p.m.
