Bronx, NY  –  Coming off of a three-game weekend series sweep at Stony Brook, the Wagner baseball team makes the short trip to the Bronx as the Seahawks square off against another non-conference local foe in the Fordham University Rams of the Atlantic 10 Conference this afternoon with first-pitch set for 2:00 p.m. at Houlihan Park. 


ALL-TIME AGAINST FORDHAM:
  • This afternoon's contest will be the 68th all-time matchup between the two New York-based schools, with Fordham leading 50-17. 
  • Wagner is trying to stop a two game losing streak to the Rams after the two teams last met for a three-game series on March 18-19 with Wagner picking up a 2-0 victory in the Bronx while Fordham swept the March 19 doubleheader on Staten Island, 6-5 and 4-3 (11 innings).



LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER: 
  • Wagner baseball completed a three-game series sweep of the Stony Brook University Seawolves with a 7-3 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon from Joe Nathan Field.
  • Making the first start of his Seahawk career, junior LHP Koby Bishop picked up his first victory of the season (1-0), firing five scoreless frames, while giving up two hits, one walk while striking out a season-high four batters.
  • Four Seahawks had multi-hit games in the finale, led by junior 3B Will Johnson, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a an RBI triple.
  • Third-year Seahawk 1B/C, Phil Capra, went 2-for-5, with three RBIs as he connected on his team-leading fifth home run of the season. In addition, Capra became the 12th Seahawk to record 100 career RBIs, as stands at exactly 100.
  • Newcomer Ben Montenegro and junior RF Anthony also picked up two hits in the contest while also driving in an RBI apiece.



ABOUT THE FORDHAM UNIVERSITY RAMS:
  • The Rams enter play on a three-game win streak after sweeping a March 10 doubleheader over Coppin State (10-8 and 4-1). 
  • Fordham already owns a victory over a Northeast Conference (NEC) member this season, defeating LIU Brooklyn 3-2 back on March 6. 
  • Through 13 games, Alvin Melendez is the team's leading hitter, posting a .326 batting average, while Jake MacKenzie paces the team with two home runs.
  • Brian Goulard and Justin Bardwell are the leading RBI producers so far with eight while collectively, the Rams are hitting .253 as a squad.
  • Fordham is a threat on the bases, stealing 42-of-51 so far this season.
  • On the hill, the Rams' pitching staff has posted a combined 3.83 ERA, led by Ben Greenberg and Reiss Knehr, each with two victories on the season. 
  • Fordham hurlers have struck out 134 batters to just allowing 57 walks so far. 



PHIL CAPRA NAMED CO-NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
  • Only days after being named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, junior catcher Phil Capra has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
  • The North Salem, NY native recorded at least one hit in all five of Wagner's games last week, totaled eight runs and had nine RBI. He homered three times, including round-trippers in the opener and finale of the Seahawks' three-game road sweep of America East member Stony Brook this past weekend.
  • Capra, who batted .421 (8-for-19) with four extra-base hits, started his week with three hits and three RBI in a neutral site affair against ACC member Virginia Tech in Deland, FL.
  • The 5-10, 205-pound Capra opened the scoring in the series opener with a first-inning sac fly. He later bumped Wagner's lead to 5-1 by cranking a two-run homer to right-centerfield in the third frame of the eventual 14-6 triumph.

 
NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • Wagner will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend for a trio of single games, beginning on Friday, March 16, as the Green & White take on Saint Joseph's, followed by a St. Patrick's Day afternoon contest at La Salle, and concluding with a contest at Villanova on Sunday, March 18.
