Piscataway, NJ  – The Wagner baseball team is back in action after sweeping last Saturday's doubleheader at Coppin State, as the Seahawks make the short trek to Piscataway, NJ to tangle Rutgers of the Big 10 Conference. 
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST RUTGERS:
  • Wagner and Rutgers are meeting for the 30th time, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 23-4-2 record.
  • Last season, these teams met twice with Rutgers taking both contests, 9-2 back on February 28, and narrowly escaping with a 12-10 win back on May 2.
  • In the May 2 contest, both teams combined for 17 runs over the first three innings and five over the final six frames with Wagner's comeback attempt falling short despite scoring three in the top of the ninth. 
  • Seven of the nine Seahawk starters had a hit on the afternoon with CF Joe Silvestrone going 2-for-5 with a career-best four RBIs. 


LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER: 
  • The Wagner baseball team scored three runs in the third and three more in the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep, blanking Coppin State, 9-0, in game two of Saturday's twinbill. 
  • Junior RHP Eric Ligda went the distance for his first victory as a member of the Seahawks, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out six batters in his second start of the season. 
  • Junior catcher Phil Capra provided much of the offensive spark for the visitors, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, scoring two runs and driving in six RBIs in the victory. Senior 2B Nick Mascelli and junior CF Joe Silvestrone each added an RBI in the contest.With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-2 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-3-1 on the year. 

 
ABOUT THE RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS:
  • Rutgers,which earned a 7-5 win at No. 9  Miami back on February 18, enters play at 2-4 on the season after playing its first six games in Florida.
  • The Scarlet Knights went 1-2 this past weekend in Port Charlotte, FL where they defeated St. Bonaventure, 13-4 when 11 different players recorded a hit. Rutgers suffered defeats to No. 17 Indiana and Boston College. 
  • Kyle Walker leads the team with a .556 batting average (5-for-9). 
  • Jawaun Harris paces the team with five RBIs while going 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. 

NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • The Seahawks will embark on a five-game, six-day road trip to Florida, as they gear up to play a three-game set at the University of Central Florida, beginning on March 2-4. 
  • Wagner concludes their tour of the Sunshine State on March 6 against Virginia Tech and Stetson on March 7 with both games played in DeLand, FL.
