Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's lacrosse team will play host to the Bryant University Bulldogs on Saturday, April 1 in a 1:00 p.m. faceoff at Hameline Field.
Saturday's tilt will mark the Northeast Conference (NEC) home opener for the 5-5 Seahawks who are 0-1 in league play having lost at Hobart on March 18. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, enter this weekend's play with an identical 5-5 overall mark and a 1-1 NEC record, having played two one-goal conference games, a 6-5 loss at Mount St. Mary's followed by an 8-7 home win over Saint Joseph's.
Wagner, under the direction of sixth-year head coach
Matt Poskay, a former All-American at the University of Virginia before embarking on an All-Star Major Lacrosse League career, is looking to match the program-record of six victories which they accomplished last season.
Earlier this season, Wagner won a program-tying three consecutive games, with the wins coming over Dartmouth, VMI and Hampton.
Junior attackman
Andrew Streilein (Lenape, NJ / Mt. Laurel) leads the Seahawks in scoring with 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists coming off a one-goal, three-assist effort in last Saturday's 11-4 victory over NJIT. The 14 goals lead the team and are one better than junior midfielder
Joe Lomeli (Clark, NJ / A.L. Johnson), a transfer from NJIT, who checks in with 17 points on 13 goals and four assists. Streilein's 12 helpers on the year also lead the team.
A pair of freshman attackman, Dominick Branda (Ringwood, NJ / Don Bosco Prep) and Nick Ancona (Warrenton, VA / Paul VI), are tied for third on the team in scoring with 16 points apiece with Branda's 16 points coming on 11 goals and five assists while Ancona has totaled 10 goals and six assists. Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) checks in a fourth on team in points with 14 points on 10 goals and four assists.
Sophomore goaltender
Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ / Morristown Beard) has made 105 saves and allowed just 84 goals for a 9.17 GAA., to go with a .556 save percentage, both of which are tops in the NEC.
Junior midfielder
Nick Warren (Granby, CT / Granby Memorial / Mount St. Mary's) and senior midfielder
Anthony Labetti (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) split time at the faceoff X for Wagner. Warren is 40-of-87 for a 46.0 winning percentage, which ranks sixth in the NEC, while Labetti is 38-of-96 for a 39.6.
Athletic junior defender
Andrew Park (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) leads the Green & White in caused turnovers (23) which ranks fourth nationally and tops in the NEC, as well as groundballs (32), which rank fifth in the league.
Following the Bryant game, Wagner travels to Moon Township, PA to meet the Robert Morris University Colonials for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff on Saturday, April 8.
