SERIES HISTORY:
  • The Seahawks and Red Storm are meeting for the 67th time, with St. John's holding a 56-10 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • The last time the Green & White earned a victory against St. John's in Queens was back on April 3, 2013 in which the Seahawks defeated the Red Storm, 22-16. In that contest, Wagner was trailing 14-4 after five innings and erupted for 18 runs over the next three frames en route to the come-from-behind victory.
  • Wagner's last victory on Staten Island against SJU came on April 7, 2010, a 5-2 win, in which the Seahawk pitching staff scattered four hits over the seven innings. Freshman Christian Rautenstrauch (Charlotte, NC / Providence Day) collected his first collegiate win, striking out two while yielding two runs, one earned, on five hits over 5.0 innings. The foursome of Andy Wells (R-Sr., Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's), Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata), Ian Karlsson (Jr., Brooklyn, NY / Xaverian) and David Rees (Jr., Staten Island, NY / Xavier) closed out the game with 4.0 scoreless innings, yielding just two hits. Rees capped his first save of the year by getting the final two outs.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S:
  • St. John's, who obtained its highest ranking since 1980 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll, is ranked No. 5 in the nation according to the publication with a record of 18-2 and are in the midst of a six-game winning streak after sweeping a three-game series from the University of Maine this past weekend.
  • The Red Storm outscored the Black Bears, 21-4, over the three-game stretch, including a 15-1 mark in the series finale.
  • St. John's, as of March 27, leads the entire NCAA in batting average, hitting a combined .337 while ranking among the top-ten in on-base percentage (.422).
  • Four Red Storm hitters rank in the top-ten in the Big East, led by John Valente, who is batting .460, good for fifth in the nation. Jesse Berardi is fourth in the Big East at .397 followed by Jamie Galazin (.387) and Michael Donadio (.355). Berardi and Valente are 1-and-2 in the Big East in on-base percentage as Berardi boasts a .520 OBP while Valente is at .510.
  • On the hill, Sean Mooney and Ryan McAuliffe are fourth and fifth in the conference in ERA, as Mooney sports a 0.88 ERA while McAuliffe is at 1.08. The duo is a combined 5-0 with 53 strikeouts and just 14 walks.

MARSH NAMED NEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
  • The Northeast Conference (NEC) announced on Monday that Wagner senior co-captain RHP Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) was named NEC Pitcher of the Week. For Marsh, it marks the first time in his career that he garnered the weekly honor.
  • With Marsh's citation this afternoon, he becomes the second Seahawk this season to capture the weekly honor, joining teammate Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School), who earned this honor back on March 6.
  • Marsh relished in the role of "stopper" on Saturday evening, tossing a complete-game shutout in preventing a series sweep at the hands of NEC rival, Fairleigh Dickinson. The Monroe Township, NJ native limited the Knights to just five hits (all singles) over nine scoreless frames in the 3-0 victory. The senior right-hander fanned a career-high nine batters and walked just three during the 118-pitch outing. He retired ten of the first 11 batters he faced, including four via strikeout.
CAPRA-DIEM:
  • Sophomore Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem), who is one of 85 catchers to be named to the 2017 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, has recorded a hit in each of the Seahawks 15 games this season.
  • Dating back to last season, the 2016 All-NEC Second Team selection is sporting a 17-game hit streak.
  • As of March 26, Capra is third in the conference in batting at .351 while fourth in slugging at .544 and among the top-ten in on-base percentage at .431.
CALL TO ARMS:
  • As of March 26, 2017, Wagner's three starting pitchers, senior co-captain Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township), senior Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School), and freshman Chris Mormile (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood), are ranked in the top five in earned run average, with Marsh leading the conference with a 0.36 ERA.
  • The trio occupies the top-three spots in opposing batting averages, with Marsh leading the way at .153 followed by Goeke at .185 and Mormile fourth at .189.
  • Combined, the Seahawk starters have struck out 72 batters through the first 15 games with Goeke ranking second with 31 punchouts, Marsh tied for fifth with 22 and Mormile tied for tenth with 19.
