LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
  • The Wagner baseball team went 1-2 in its opening series at the 2017 Mardi Gras Invitational, hosted by Nicholls State.
  • The Seahawks fell in the opener to Southern University, 11-4, after leading through seven innings.
  • The following day, the bats erupted as the Green & White cruised to a 19-3 victory over Grambling State. At the dish, 11 of 13 Seahawk batters recorded at least one hit, and were led by junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), who went 3-for-5 with four runs scored. Classmate Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) connected on his first-ever grand slam.
  • Senior co-captain Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) struck out five batters over five innings in his first start of the year, garnering recognition by the Northeast Conference (NEC) as a #NECPrimePeformer.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • The Seahawks and Scarlet Knights are meeting for the 28th time, with Rutgers holding a 21-4-2 edge in the series.
  • In last season's contest, Wagner was shutout, 8-0, at home. Graduated CF Trey Nicosia and pinch-hitter James Wise (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) were the lone players to muster a base-hit.
  • The last time the Seahawks won at Bainton Field was back on April 7, 2015, in which they were trailing 4-1 until the top of the eighth inning when the Seahawks erupted for ten runs in the top of the frame to come from behind and defeat Rutgers, 11-4.

WAGNER-RUTGERS CONNECTION:
  • The common thread of this afternoon's contest is Joe Litterio, a 1994 graduate of Rutgers, who is also the all-time winningest coach in Wagner Seahawk history, with 240 wins over 12 season on Grymes Hill.
SCOUTING RUTGERS:
  • The Scarlet Knights are 1-5 on the season. They dropped the first two games in Coral Gables, FL against the University of Miami Hurricanes before salvaging the finale in impressive fashion, 17-6.
  • Rutgers then traveled to Charlottesville, VA to take on the 2015 CWS champions, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, falling in all three games.
  • Milo Freeman leads the team with a .400 batting average while him and Mike Carter are tied for the team-lead in hits with eight.
  • Jawaun Harris has belted three home runs in the first six games while today's probale pitcher, Christian Campbell, leads the Scarlet Knights with five RBIs.
  • On the hill, John O'Reilly has seen the most work, tossing 12.0 innings in two appearances and leads the staff with seven strikeouts.
NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • The Green & White will head down to Towson, MD for a weekend series with the Tigers, March 3rd through March 5
