West Long Branch, NJ – Fresh off last Friday's rousing 9-8 victory over Lafayette at Hameline Field, the Wagner men's lacrosse team is back in action on Tuesday, February 21 when they travel to Monmouth for a 3:00 p.m. faceoff with the Hawks which will be held at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.
The Seahawks are 1-1 on the young season, having dropped a tough 14-13 three-overtime decision at Manhattan in the season opener back on February 11. Monmouth, which was picked second in the MAAC Preseason Poll, is also off to a 1-1 start. After opening the season with an impressive 12-10 victory over No. 16 Villanova, MU dropped an 11-9 decision at Hofstra on Saturday.
Defensively, the Seahawks are led by sophomore goalie
Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ / Morristown Beard) who corralled a career-high 17 saves in the win over Lafayette, a performance that earned him Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Also helping to spearhead the Seahawk defense is junior
Andrew Park (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon), who has a team-high eight caused turnovers to go with seven groundballs, which rank second on the team.
Offensively, junior midfielder
Joe Lomeli (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson / NJIT) and junior attackman
Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) are tied for the team lead in scoring with five points apiece. Lomeli's five points have come on a team-best four goals and one assist while Streilein has produced three goals and two assists through two games.
Junior midfielder
Nick Warren (Granby, CT / Granby Memorial / Mount St. Mary's) owns the team's best faceoff percentage mark at .438, having won seven of his 16 tries in the X.
