Staten Island, NY – With inclement weather expected in the New York City area, the Wagner baseball team will welcome Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, Central Connecticut on Friday April 1 and Saturday April 2.
The series, originally set for a single-game Friday, doubleheader Saturday, single-game Sunday, will now begin with a doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 p.m., featuring a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest. The series then resumes with another doubleheader on Saturday, with a seven-inning game starting at 1:00 p.m. followed by a nine-inning contest.
LAST TIME OUT:- Despite producing 12 hits in the contest and scoring early in the contest, the Wagner baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision on the road at Big East rival St. John's on Wednesday afternoon.
- With the loss, the Seahawks saw their season-high four-game win streak snapped as they now stand at 8-10 while the Red Storm improve to 12-9-1.
- Freshman 1B Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went 3-for-5 at the plate. Sophomore 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) and newly-minted NEC Rookie of the Week, freshman designated hitter Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem), each had two hits with both Harrold and Capra producing one RBI apiece.
- Wagner also received RBI hits from sophomore LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) and freshman RF Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck).
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS:- Central Connecticut comes into the series with a 7-13 overall record and a 4-3 mark on the road this year.
- The Blue Devils will look for their first win over the Seahawks since taking a 7-0 victory in New Britain, CT back on April 27, 2014 as Wagner swept last season's four-game series.
- Four Blue Devils are hitting over .300 on the season, led by senior backstop Connor Fitzsimons, who is batting .352 (19-for-54).
- Sophomore infielder Ryan Costello leads the squad with 10 RBIs and a team-leading .464 slugging percentage.
MASCELLI AMONG TOP HITTERS IN NCAA:- Entering the weekend, sophomore shortstop Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) ranks fourth in the nation with a .474 batting average.
- The third-year Seahawk concluded the month of March batting .452 with 3 HR, 11 RBIs and is the reigning NEC Player of the Week after going .667 (12-for-18) and slugging 1.278 against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers.
AUSTIN POWERS:- Junior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) ranks second in the conference with a 1.93 earned-run average (ERA) while ranking among the top-25 in the NCAA in hits allowed per nine innings (4.82).
ADAMS CLIMBING THE WINS CHART:- Senior RHP Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Holy Spirit) needs just one win to tie former teammate Anthony Battaglia for 12th place on the Wagner baseball career wins list.
- Former Seahawks Matt Watson ('10), Joe Testa ('08), Bill Willetts ('48) and Don Finley ('53) are all tied with 19 career victories.
