Baseball Aims For Fifth Straight Win Tonight At 7:00 PM Against The Manhattan Jaspers

Live Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College baseball team (20-15-1) will go for its fifth straight win, hosting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Manhattan College tonight at 7:00 pm from Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

INSIDE THE SERIES:
  • This evening's contest marks the 30th meeting between the two schools, with Manhattan leading the series 16-12-1.
  • These two teams last met on April 2, 2008 on Staten Island as the Jaspers shutout the Seahawks, 15-0.
  • Wagner last defeated Manhattan, 10-2, back on March 4, 2001.
  • This season, the Seahawks are 3-0 against MAAC schools this season after defeating Marist, 7-2, back on March 26, Saint Peter's, 11-6, on April 14 and Fairfield, 6-2, on April 15.
  • Manhattan has not played a Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent this season.

SLOW START A DISTANT MEMORY FOR SURGING SEAHAWKS:
  • Wagner swept its way into first place this past weekend.
  • The Seahawks recorded their first NEC four-game series sweep in two years, victimizing Central Connecticut on Staten Island, and improving their conference record to 9-3.
  • The .750 win percentage places Wagner atop the NEC standings exactly halfway through its league schedule.
  • Wagner became the first NEC team this season to accumulate 20 victories overall. After an 0-8-1 start to the 2015 schedule, skipper Jim Carone has watched his team turn around its season. The Seahawks own a 20-15-1 overall record.
  • With three NEC series remaining, Wagner is on pace to qualify for the NEC Tournament for the second year in a row.

SCOUTING MANHATTAN (14-27; 7-11 MAAC):
  • The Jaspers overcame an eight-run deficit as they posted a nine-run seventh inning en route to a 14-13 come-from-behind victory over Fordham on Tuesday evening.
  • With the win, Manhattan has won three straight, tying its season-high.
  • Junior Christian Santisteban is the team's leading hitter with a .288 average and also paces the Jaspers with 12 doubles and drawn the most walks on the team (22).
  • Joe Jacques, who was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, boasts a 4.06 ERA with a 2-1 record while he notched a complete game, two-hit, eight-strikeout shutout victory by a 7-0 score in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Niagara.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SEAHAWKS:
  • For the first time since the 2013 season, the Wagner baseball team swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) series as the Seahawks defeated the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, 4-1, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
  • Senior right-hander Max Schmardel (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) picked up his second win in his third start of the year, as the fourth-year Seahawk tossed five innings, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.Classmates Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) and Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) combined to hurl four innings of scoreless relief with Bloodworth picking up his sixth save of the season and 12th of his career. The 12 saves from Bloodworth moves him into third place all-time in Wagner history ahead of Battaglia, who has 11.
  • Senior 2B Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) and senior RF Zack Yesko (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago) each had two hits for the Seahawks. Yesko provided the bulk of the damage for the Green & White with two RBIs. With his inclusion in today's starting lineup, Dini has now appeared in 200 consecutive games, which is good for fifth all-time in Seahawk history.

ON DECK FOR WAGNER:
  • Wagner will travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to start a four-game series with the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, beginning on Friday, May 1.
  • After the Mount series, the Seahawks will travel to Fairfield, Connecticut on May 8 to take on the Sacred Heart University Pioneers
  • The final regular season series will be at Richmond County Bank Ballpark as the Green & White host Bryant on May 14.
