Senior Day Ceremony I Highlights

Staten Island, NY – Sacred Heart rallied with three fourth-quarter goals in overcoming an 8-6 deficit and posting a 9-8 win over Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's lacrosse action today at Hameline Field.

In a wild back-and-forth affair that featured six ties and six lead changes, the Pioneers improve to 2-4 in NEC play in keeping their hopes alive for an appearance in the 2015 NEC Tournament, while evening their overall record at 6-6. In dropping their fourth straight game, which comes on the heels of last week's equally heartbreaking 7-6 overtime loss at Hobart, the Seahawks fall to 1-4 in league play and 4-8 overall.

With the game tied at 6-6, Wagner surged ahead with a pair of goals in a span of 2:34, bridging the third and fourth quarters. With 53 seconds left in the third, freshman Billy Orme buried his third goal of the game off a feed from junior attackman Billy Battaglia (Madison, NJ/Madison) to make it a 7-6 game. Then, just 1:41 into the fourth quarter, freshman attackman Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel,, NJ/Lenape) made it an 8-6 game with his team-best 23rd goal of the season.

The Pioneers sliced the deficit in half on an Alex Dodge unassisted score at the 11:56 mark. After the Seahawks missed a chance to regain a two-goal edge on an extra-man opportunity, the Pioneers answered with the equalizer by Matt Posch with 7:27 remaining off of a Bryce Jurk assist. The score remained tied at 8-8 until the 4:26 mark when Julian Garritano blasted home what would prove to be the game-winner on an unassisted tally.

Orme added an assist to his hat trick which gave him a team-high four points. Redshirt-sophomore attackman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) added two goals and one assist. Streilein finished with two points (1G, 1A), while adding one point apiece were senior attackman David DeCirce (Clarence, NY/Clarence) who notched one goal, as well as junior midfielder Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and freshman midfielder JP Pawela (Montgomery Village, MD/St. John's College), who supplied one assist apiece.

Redshirt-sophomore William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) was magnificent in the circle all game long as he consistently provided the Seahawks with possession while winning 13-of-19 faceoffs. The gritty, gutsy 5'5" competitor dug out six ground balls as well.

Defensively, senior Matt Bunting (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) delivered a gallant performance in his final game on Grymes Hill, matching William McMenamin for team-high honors with six ground balls, while coming up with a team-best three caused turnovers. In goal, senior Anthony Peruso (Waldwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic), who entered the game ranked sixth nationally with a 7.47 goals against average, had four saves.

Jerome Rigor registered a team-high four points with two goals and two assists while Garritano and Brian Masi finished with two goals each for the Pioneers. Jon Flood recorded seven saves in goal for Sacred Heart.

Wagner held a 31-21 edge in shots, led in ground balls 28-20 and won 13-of-21 faceoffs.

The Seahawks will close out the 2015 regular season with a road contest at Robert Morris on Saturday, April 25. Faceoff between the Green & White and Colonials is 1:00 p.m.
