Wagner Baseball To Host Fairfield This Afternoon At Richmond County Bank Ballpark

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team (13-12-1) returns home to Richmond County Bank Ballpark this afternoon as the Seahawks welcome Fairfield University.

INSIDE THE SERIES:
  • This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
  • Wagner is 2-0 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schools this season after defeating Marist, 7-2, back on March 26 and Saint Peter's yesterday 11-6.
  • Fairfield has not played a Northeast Conference (NEC) school this season, but, holds a 64-85-2 all-time record against current members of the conference.  

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
  • Freshman LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) recorded a career-high four hits to lead the Wagner baseball team to an 11-6 win over Saint Peter's University on Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
  • Eight of the nine starters hit safely for the Seahawks, who recorded their fourth double-digit run total of the season against their counterparts from the MAAC in improving to 13-12-1 on the season while the Peacocks fall to 4-22-1.
  • Fifth-year senior right-hander Nick Pavia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief of left-handed starter Alex Amadeo (Staten Island, NYH/St. Joseph By The Sea) to pick up his third victory of the season as he struck out one batter and issued just one walk.

STREAKING ALONG:
  • Senior C/INF Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) has appeared in 190 consecutive games. 
  • In addition, Dini has reached base safely in 26 straight games, dating back to May 23, 2014 against Sacred Heart. 
  • Reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) has reached base safely in 18 straight games.
  • Wagner, which opened the season 0-8-1 in its first nine games, is now 13-4-1 over the last 18 contests.

TOUGHEST TO STRIKE OUT:
  • Senior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) is the fourth toughest batter to strike out in the NCAA as the fourth-year Seahawk has only struck-out seven times. 

8th INNING BARRAGE:
  • Wagner has outscored its opponents, 22-15, in the eighth inning while posting a batting average of .347  

MAXIMUM EFFORT:
  • Senior Max Schmardel (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) will make his second start of the season when he takes the bump for Wagner this afternoon.
  • In his first outing against Big East member, Seton Hall, the towering 6-5 right-hander pitched 5.0 innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run while issuing two walks and tying a career-high five strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE STAGS:
  • Fairfield (7-21) has lost five games in a row, most recently to UCONN, 7-0, despite limiting the Huskies to only six hits. 
  • Sophomore infielder Michael Conti is the team's leading hitter, posting a batting average of .289.  
  • Senior Sebastian Salvo has drove in a team-leading 20 RBIs on the year to go along with a team-best 28 hits.
  • Fairfield is a threat to run as they have successfully swiped 70% (23-of-33) of its stolen bases attempts.
  • Anchoring the pitching staff is Kyle Dube, who has a team-leading three wins with an ERA of 3.60 while striking out 21 and walking just 8 batters. 
  • Senior Andrew Gallagher has seen the most work out of the bullpen, as he has appeared in 12 contests, with 1-0 record, an ERA of 1.59 while not walking a single batter in his appearance. (7 Ks, 0 BB). 

DINI NAMED TO 2015 JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST: 
  • The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has announced that Wagner senior catcher Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) is one of 85 backstops to be named to the official watch list for the 2015 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com, given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher.
  • For Dini, it marks the second straight season in which the Garden State native was selected as a nominee for the award. 
NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • Pending any schedule additions, the Seahawks will take on the NJIT Highlanders in a non-conference series beginning on April 17 through April 19.  
  • The Green & White will travel to Newark on April 17 for a 6:00 p.m. start.
  • The next day, the two teams will be pitted in a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
  • The series finale is set for Sunday, April 19 back in Newark with a 1:00 p.m. start.
