Box Score (XML) | Box Score (HTML) | Box Score (PDF) | Staten Island Advance Recap (Pictured Above: Sophomore shortstop Nick Mascelli [Photo by Katie Carlson] Teaneck, NJ – The Wagner baseball team fell one game short of the sweep Sunday afternoon, as Fairleigh Dickinson won the fourth and final game by a 4-1 count after the Seahawks had won the first three games of the series.
With the loss, the Seahawks are now 12-12-1 and 5-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Knights stand at 8-15, 2-6 in conference.
Senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) finished the game 2-for-4 while sophomore SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), senior C
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) and senior 1B
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) each recorded one hit on the day. Mascelli finished the series batting .533 (8-for-15) with 5 RBIs.
Wagner plated the first run of the afternoon in the top of the second as senior RF
Zack Yesko (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Dini. The fourth-year catcher, who has appeared in 189 straight games, reached base with a single to right and promptly stole his team-leading seventh base.
FDU tied the game 1-1 on a Shane Siebler RBI single to left as Joel Roman crossed the plate. FDU tried to score two on the play but Wagner LF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) was able to gun out John Giakas at the plate.
The Knights went in front 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Bobby Romano sent a single to center, bringing Ryan Brennan in from third. Fairleigh Dickinson held the Seahawks, who outscored the Knights 24-7 over the first three games of the series, off the scoreboard the rest of the way while tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth in avoiding the weekend sweep.
Sophomore
Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) took the loss as he falls to 1-1 on the year after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing just four hits, two runs (both earned), four strikeouts and a season-high five walks. FDU's Logan Frati pitched 7.1 innings of five-hit ball, giving up one run while striking out two Seahawks. Eric Snyder came in to record his fifth save of the year after pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Green & White will return to action on Tuesday, April 14 when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to square off against Saint Peter's University. First pitch between the Seahawks and Peacocks is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
