Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) picked up the win with 3.1 innings of solid relief, to lead the Wagner baseball team to a 6-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the second game of today's doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Battaglia allowed one run on two hits in improving to 3-1 on the season. Fifth-year senior left-hander
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) started for Wagner, allowing one run over 3.2 innings.
The game two win came on the heels of a
3-0 victory in the opener and improves the Seahawks' Northeast Conference (NEC) record to 5-2 while pushing their overall mark above the .500 mark at 12-11-1. Following today's two defeats, the Knights fall to 1-6 in conference play and 7-15 overall on the season.
Wagner, which
won the series opener by a 15-5 count on Friday, will go for the four-game series sweep on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. single-game nine inning matchup.
The Green & White plated single runs in each of the first three innings. In the opening frame, Wagner jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by senior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township, who played second base in game two after spending the first game behind the plate.
An RBI double by Mascelli in the second inning made it 2-0 before a run-scoring single by Yesko in the third made it a 3-0 game. FDU got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by John Giakas in cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Wagner then extended its lead to 5-1 with two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by freshman
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) and Mascelli before Yesko capped the Seahawks' scoring with his second RBI single in the sixth that widened the Wagner lead to 6-1.
FDU's Joel Roman fashioned the final score at 6-2 with a pinch-hit solo home run over the right-centerfield wall in the home half of the sixth.
Sarter Ryan McGrath absorbed the loss in seeing his season mark fall to 4-2 after allowing three earned runs on five hits and five walks in 3.2 innings of work. Yonah Perline, Eric Snyder, Anthony Calise and Max Wolfe turned in relief appearances for the Knights.
