Seahawks Look To Stay Hot As They Welcome LIU Brooklyn In NEC Opener

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team will open Northeast Conference (NEC) play this weekend as the Seahawks welcome the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds to Richmond County Bank Ballpark with a four-game series.

SCHEDULE CHANGE
  • Due to potential inclement weather, changes have been announced for this weekend's home Wagner baseball series vs. NEC rival LIU Brooklyn.
  • The Seahawks and Blackbirds will square off on April 2 in a doubleheader with a first pitch slated for 3:00 pm. The first game is scheduled for nine innings followed by a seven-inning contest in game two.
  • On Friday, April 3, Wagner and LIU Brooklyn are scheduled to play a single seven-inning game at 1:00 pm. The series will conclude on Saturday, April 4 with a single nine-inning contest starting at 1:00 pm. 
LAST TIME OUT...
  • Wagner is currently the hottest team in the NEC after picking up its sixth straight victory following a doubleheader sweep of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Sunday, defeating the Bears 7-6 in game one and 12-3 in game two. 
RUTA NAMED WALSH ELECTRIC STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH...
  • Junior infielder/outfielder Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South), along with junior center Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) of the women's water polo team, were named the Walsh Electric Student Athletes of the Month for March on Wednesday.
  • Ruta ended the month with a hitting streak that has ballooned to 21 games, as he helped lead the streaking Seahawks to six straight victories.
  • The 6'3"outfielder sprayed the ball all over the field for a batting average of .449 over the team's 12 games. The New Jersey native added 12 runs, 11 RBIs and one home run to round out his impressive month.
IRON MAN NICK...
  • Senior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) is Wagner's "Iron Man" as the fourth-year catcher has started 179 consecutive games, good for third among all NCAA seniors. 
  • Senior infielder Alex Perez of Virginia Tech has started in 199 straight games, followed by TCU's senior infielder Keaton Jones, who has appeared in 184 consecutive games. 
SCOUTING LIU BROOKLYN...
  • The Blackbirds enter this weekend's series on a six-game losing streak, dating back to a March 14 setback against Illinois State in Winter Haven, FL in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.  
  • Redshirt-sophomore outfielder Tommy Jakubowski is the team's leading hitter with a .397 batting average. Senior outfielder Jon McAllister has batted .545  over his last five games (12-for-22), with four stolen bases and four RBIs. 
  • On the hill, sophomore left-hander Evan Flood along with senior right-hander Dustin Carlson has posted an ERA of 2.51 and 2.63, respectively.  Carlson has one of the Blackbirds' two saves on the season.
THIS AND THAT...
  • During Wagner's six-game winning streak, the team is batting .346 while holding its opponents to a .242 batting average. The Green & White have outscored their opponents 43-17 over the last six games, while swiping 11-of-14 bases.
  • The Wagner pitching staff has been splendid of late, posting a team ERA of 2.50 while going 6-0 with two saves. During this streak, the Seahawk bullpen has been charged with 15 earned runs, while opposing pitching staffs have given up 37 earned runs over these last six games.  
  • Wagner fourth-year head coach Jim Carone picked up career win No. 70 in the Seahawks' come-from-behind win over NYIT in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader.
  • Carone is now in sixth place on the all-time Seahawk wins list, trailing Tom Hahne by seven wins.
ON DECK FOR WAGNER...
  • Wagner welcomes Big East member Seton Hall to Staten Island as the Seahawks and Pirates are scheduled to play on April 8 at 3:30 pm Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
