Wasilick's Puts Wagner Ahead; Dini Follows With RBI In 4-2 Win

Bronx, NY - Behind a 4-for-5, two RBI day from senior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township), the Wagner College baseball team picked up its third straight win as the Seahawks defeated the Fordham University Rams 4-2 at Houlihan Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Wagner (3-8-1) struck first in the top of the third inning as Dini singled through the left side, scoring sophomore shortstop Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), who started the rally with a walk. Freshman Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) followed with a single to right center, allowing junior Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South), who extended his hitting streak to 14 games, to come around for the second run of the stanza.

Fordham answered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning on a throwing error and had an opportunity to tie the game in the fifth before Seahawk starting pitcher Nick Pavia (Staten Island, NY/ St. Joseph By the Sea) was able to force Joseph DeVito to ground out to Mascelli, who started an inning-ending 6-3 double play to end the Rams threat.

Pavia worked a sharp five innings, allowing one hit and an unearned run. Sophomore Alex Amadeo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) came on in relief of Pavia in the fifth gave up a double to Joe Runco and a bunt single to Ian Edmiston. Head coach Jim Carone then made his second pitching change of the inning, summoning senior right-hander, Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea).

On his third pitch, Battaglia  was able to get Matthew Kozuch to ground out to Mascelli for the first out of the inning which tied the game at 2-2 as Runco scored from third. Battaglia was able to end the inning with two more grounders.

The Seahawks scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth as senior Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) reached on a dropped fly by centerfielder Joe Lundy which scored freshman designated hitter Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), who reached base on a single, which was his first career hit.

In the bottom half of the eighth, senior Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) came on in relief of Battaglia. After setting down the first two Rams, Bloodworth issued a walk to Kozuch, who then was able to steal second.  Mark Donadio reached first after Mascelli couldn't successfully transfer the ball from the glove in an attempt to throw to first.  Bloodworth was able to stop the Fordham rally as he got Charles Galiano to ground out to freshman third baseman Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]).

Wagner added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Dini recorded his fourth hit of the contest, an RBI single to left field, bringing Mascelli around to score and giving the visitors a two-run advantage.

Despite allowing a pair of hits in the bottom half of the inning, Bloodworth recorded his second save of the season as he pitched two innings of shutout ball while Battaglia was credited with the win, evening his record at 1-1 on the season.

Pending any schedule additions, the Seahawks will travel to Old Westbury, NY on Saturday, March 28t as they take on the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Bears in an doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
