Staten Island, NY -
Wagner scored twice in the third inning and used an impressive pitching performance to defeat Hofstra 2-1 in non-conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The Seahawks improve to 15-29 while the Pride falls to 18-21.

Freshman RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ / The Hun School) allowed just one run over 3.2 innings to earn his first collegiate victory thanks to an exemplary bullpen performance from sophomore LHP Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough), junior RHP Max Schmardel (Eatontown, NJ / Monmouth Regional) and classmate RHP Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon). The trio struck out three while allowing just three runners, all of which were erased, in 5.1 innings of scoreless relief.

After the visitors had a pair of runners gunned out trying to steal over the first two innings, Wagner struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Zack Yesko (Mukwonago, WI / Mukwonago) was plunked before freshman Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Liberty) drew a walk. The pair were then moved to second-and-third on Evan Fardella's (Fr., Bartonsville, PA / Pocono Mountain East) successful sacrifice bunt. Freshman Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) followed with a RBI ground out to plate Yesko and open up the scoring. Junior Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) followed with a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle to bring around Benecke.

Hofstra immediately answered in the top of the fourth as Matt Ford hit a two-out triple to center field before Brad Witkoswki followed with a RBI double to score Ford while trimming the deficit to 2-1. Goeke, who was on a strict pitch count, was then lifted for Mammino, who needed just one pitch to get out of the jam.

Mammino would then allow a pair of runners over the next two frames but picked both off before being aided by some impressive defense in capping his impressive 3.1 scoreless innings of work. After inducing a routine grounder to second to open the second, Mascelli sprawled out to snare a line drive off the bat of Brad Witkowski before getting to his feet and throwing over to first for the second out. For good measure, Mascelli closed out the frame with another assist.

Schmardel relieved Mammino and worked a perfect top of the eighth, highlighted by junior Tommy Mazurkiewicz's (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) grab in foul territory for the final out.

Wagner loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but was unable to further dent the scoreboard as Hofstra used a double play to exit unscathed.

In the ninth, Bloodworth allowed a one-out bunt single before inducing a double play to Mascelli, who started a 6-4-3 game-ending double play.

Both teams had five hits on the evening as the Seahawks were paced by Yesko (2-for-2, R, HBP) and Gordon (2-for-4, RBI).

Graham Tebbit (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Pride, allowing both Green & White runs on two hits over 4.0 innings. Witkoswki was 2-for-3 with a RBI double to lead the way for the visitors.

Wagner returns to action on Friday, May 9 against Sacred Heart first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
