Staten Island, NY - Freshman RHP
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) allowed just two runs over a career-high 7.0 innings of action to lead Wagner to a 6-2 win over Mount St. Mary's to secure a series split at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The first five Seahawk batters combined to go 8-for-17 with five RBI to help the Green & White improve to 14-29 and 7-9 in the NEC. The visitors, meanwhile, fall to 15-22 and 8-12 in the league.
Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) led off the game for Wagner with a single to center field. He then moved to second on a balk before advancing to third on a well-placed ground out. Senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) followed with a RBI ground to plate Mascelli while opening the scoring.
The Seahawks added to the lead with another single run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) laced his team-leading 14th double down the left field line. On the ensuing play, Flynn singled sharply to score Smith while extending the advantage out to 2-0.
On the mound, Marsh was solid and used some timely pitching and defense to keep the Mount off the scoreboard for the first six innings.
After Mount St. Mary's pieced together a pair of two-out hits in the top of the first, Mascelli made a nice play at short for the final out of the frame before Marsh induced a pair of inning-ending double plays in the third and fourth innings to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
In the fifth, the Mountaineers again threatened but had another rally snuffed out by a pair of tremendous defensive plays. With a runner on first, junior
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) made a sprawling leap on a pop up to the Bermuda triangle to rob Josh Lenig of what have been his second hit of the game. The Mountaineers then executed a successful hit-and-run before having Tommy Quealy thrown out after taking a wide turn at first. Sophomore
John Lynn (Wallingford, NJ / Salesianum School (DE)) then snared a line drive to get the final out at first.
The Mount would finally break through in the top of the seventh as Quealy atoned for his baserunning blunder by delivering a two-run single to tie the game up at 2-2.
Wagner would immediately answer in the bottom part of the frame with a pair of runs. Junior
Zack Yesko (Mukwonago, WI / Mukwonago) and Wasilick each drew walks to lead off the inning. Mascelli moved the runners to second-and-third with a successful sacrifice bunt before Smith smoked a two-run single to left field, scoring Yesko and Wasilick.
After the Mountaineers was set down in order in the top of the eighth, the Seahawks pounced for two more runs while extending their advantage out to 6-2. Lynn led off with a single before junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) doubled him over to third. Lynn would come around to score on a Yesko sacrifice fly while Mazurkiewicz was plated on a Mascelli sacrfice fly.
The four-run advantage was more than enough for junior RHP
Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon), who retired the side in order in the ninth to finish off a four-out save while recording his second stop of the season.
Marsh improved to a team-best 4-3 on the season, striking out three while yielding two runs on eight hits and three walks.
Smith notched multiple-hits for the fourth-straight game, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and finished up the series batting .571 (8-of-14) with four runs, four doubles and five RBI. Mascelli and Dini each added two hits for a Seahawk unit that recorded 11 on the afternoon.
Quealy was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the way for the Mount while RHP Scott Nickerson (1-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on three walks over 1.2 innings.
Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, May 7 when it welcomes Hofstra to the ballpark with first pitch slated for 6:00 pm.
