Smithfield, RI - Wagner defeated Bryant 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Conaty Park behind a total team effort while keeping alive its playoff hopes alive.
The Seahawks will need to win game two while hoping that Fairleigh Dickinson takes two from Mount St. Mary's. The shutout win also marked the third time this season the Bulldogs have been blanked as well as the first time during league play since May 5, 2012.
Wagner scored the lone run in the top of the first and made it stand thanks to withstanding rallies over the final four frames, including stranding the tying run at third on two occasions.
The Seahawks improve to 18-33 and 10-13 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bryant falls to 39-13 and 19-4 in the league.
Wagner took its first lead of the series thanks to a two-out rally in the opening inning. Junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) smoked a single to center field before faking a steal to second that allowed senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) to find a hole for the second-straight hit. Junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) followed with a run-scoring single to plate Dini while accounting for what prove to be the lone run of the game.
After failing to notch a hit off of freshman RHP
Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / South Kent) over the first three innings, Robbie Rinn led off the fourth with a double. Rinn, however, was erased on a fielder's choice grounder before Long recorded a strikeout and a pop up to evade any damage.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out but were were unable to capitalize as Long induced a fielder's choice grounder to get the lead runner at home. He then got Rinn to fly out at the track for the final out.
Bryant again threatened in the sixth as Matt Albanese led off with a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. An infield single failed to advance Albanese and junior RHP
Steven Bloodworth (Annadale, NJ / North Hunterdon) took advantage by inducing an inning-ending double play.
Down but not out, the Bulldogs again threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Cole Fabio led off with an infield single. However, freshman shortstop
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) made impressive snare of Jordan Mountford's grounder up the middle before flipping to junior second baseman
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) to start a 6-4-3 double play. Bloodworth then finished off his team-leading fifth save with by striking out John Mullen to preserve the 1-0 win.
Flynn went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead a six-hit Seahawk attack while Long (3-3) earned the win, striking out five while yielding just two hits over 5.0 innings.
