Staten Island, NY - Victor Sorrento's go-ahead two-run homer lifted Sacred Heart to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wagner in the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The Pioneers scored four runs in the pivotal sixth inning en route to moving to 23-24 and 10-9 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 17-30 and 9-10 in the league.
For the second-straight game, the Green & White struck first with a pair of first-inning runs on three hits. Senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) blooped a one-out single to left field before junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) reached via an infield single to third. Senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) then walked to the load the bases before Smith scored the first run on a wild pitch. Following a ground out, junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) plated Dini with a RBI single while capping the two-run outburst.
Wagner would add to the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the third but the damage could have been worse. With two outs, Flynn scored an error while keeping the bases loaded for the Seahawks. Freshman
Evan Fardella (Bartonsville, PA / Pocono Mountain East) then hit a screamer to the right side that second baseman Ted Shaw snared with a full-extension dive before throwing over to first for the final out of the frame.
Unfortunately, the Green & White would only be able to muster three more singles the rest of the game.
On the mound, freshman RHP
Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / South Kent) was dominating on the mound over his first five innings of work, allowing just a pair of singles while striking out six with three perfect frames.
However, in the top of the sixth the Pioneers finally got to Long. Zack Short got the rally started with a one-out triple before Jayson Sullivan worked a walk. Short then scored on a fielder's choice grounder while Sullivan advanced to third on a throwing error. After a ground out plated the second out, Sorrento hit his game-changing home run to left center while giving the visitors a 4-3 lead.
James Cooksey fired 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win while improving to 3-1 on the season.
Long (2-3) finished with a career-high seven strikeouts while yielding four runs, one earned, over 6.0 innings of work.
Mazurkiewicz and Mascelli each recorded two of Wagner's seven hits to lead the way on offense.
