Staten Island, NY - Sacred Heart scored two unearned runs in the top of the 12th to defeat Wagner 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The Seahawks fall to 17-31 and 9-11 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Pioneers improve to 24-24 and 11-9 in the league.
Sacred Heart led off the decisive 12th inning with a pair of singles to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Sophomore RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) then induced a grounder to short as senior
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) got the lead runner at the plate for the first out of the frame. Adams then induced what appeared to be an inning-ending double play grounder only to see the ball go through the infielder's legs before getting by Green & White defense in the outfield, allowing a pair of runs to score in the process.Â
James Cooksey then shut the door on Wagner with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th while capping 4.0 perfect innings of relief in moving to 4-1 on the year.
Adams (1-5) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, striking out four while yielding just two unearned runs on 3.1 innings work.
After dropping a heartbreaker in the opener, the Seahawks struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) led off with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. Classmate
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) followed with a successful sacrifice bunt in which the ball was thrown wide of first, allowing Flynn to cross the plate.
The Pioneers would tie the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth thanks to manufacturing a run. Zach Short led off with a single, stole second and would move to third on a sacrifice before Derick Horn delivered a two-out RBI single.
Sacred Heart would again threaten in each each of the next two frames but would come away empty-handed both as freshman RHP
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) left the bases loaded in the fifth while stranding a runner on second in the sixth.
Wagner then seemed poised to break the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth as Flynn and Smith each led off with walks while forcing the Pioneers to the their bullpen. Unfortunately, Dan Wertz got the lead runner at third before inducing an inning-ending double play grounder.
The Seahawks would again post another serious threat in the eighth as junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) led off with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Smith then reached via a leadoff single while pushing Dini to third. However, on the next play Dini would be thrown out at the plate on a failed safety squeeze. Wertz then completed his third inning of work by inducing a grounder back to the mound for the final out.
SHU put runners at the corner in the top of the ninth with two outs only to see Adams strike out Short looking.
After Wagner failed to score in the bottom part of the frame, both teams went in order in the 10th before Victor Sorrento led off the 11th with a triple. Sorrento, however, would be stranded as Adams induced a grounder before striking out the next batter and getting a harmless grounder to second to keep the visitors off the board.
Sacred Heart would break the deadlock in the 12th with the aforementioned two runs en route to splitting the series.
Both teams had their opportunities throughout the game but went a combined 2-for-27 with runners in scoring position while 22 runners.
Flynn went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk to lead a six-hit Seahawk attack.
Jesus Medina was 3-for-6 while Short went 2-for-4 with two runs to pace the Pioneers.
