Brooklyn, NY - Freshman RHP
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) struck out four and yielded just two runs over 6.0 innings of work in leading Wagner to a 4-2 win over LIU Brooklyn in the second game of a doubleheader at LIU Field.
Senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) led the offense, finishing up 2-for-3 with double, home run and three RBI while helping the Seahawks improve to 5-18 and 2-1 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) as the Blackbirds fall to 13-11-1 and 1-2 in the league.
Wagner struck quickly for three runs in the opening inning. Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep), senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) and junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) all singled to quickly load the bases with no outs. Flynn then opened the scoring with a two-run double to plate Mascelli and Smith while moving Dini to third base. Junior
Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) would cap the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Dini while giving the Seahawks what would prove to be an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Flynn would be back at it two innings later as his one-out home run to right field extended the Green & White advantage out to 4-0.
After leaving runners in scoring position in fourth and fifth innings, LIU Brooklyn would finally dent the scoreboard on Mark Hernandez's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 4-2. Undaunted, Marsh calmly got the next three outs without incident to preserve the Seahawk advantage.
Junior RHP
Steven Bloodworth then worked a scoreless seventh to become the third different Green & White pitcher to earn a save this week.
Wagner's top four hitters combined to record all six of the team's hits in the game while reaching base at a .563 clip (9-of-16). Marsh was the beneficiary of the Seahawk offense, improving to 2-1 on the year thanks with his second win of the week..
Graduate student LHP Matt McCormick (2-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.
Wagner will now go for the series victory tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
