Additionally, Wagner has never won a series when playing at CCSU, losing the last six series match-ups after splitting a pair of games in the teams' first meeting in Connecticut.
Last 10The Seahawks have been swinging a hot stick at the plate over their last 10 games, hitting .335 while averaging 6.0 runs each time out.
Jersey State Of MindWagner has played each of its last 10 games against teams from New Jersey, going 7-3 during that time.
Saint Peter's RecapThe Seahawks erupted for a season-high 13 runs and 20 hits in posting an easy 13-7 victory over Saint Peter's on April 17. All nine regulars hit safely while freshman RHP
Danny Marsh earned his team-leading third win.
Saves The DayIn arguably the Green & White's finest offensive performance to date, reliever RHP
Max Schmardel picked up the most unlikely stat ... a save. Firing 3.1 innings of relief, the Garden State native became the sixth different Wagner hurler to earn a save this season. Schmardel has struck out nine this season over 9.0 innings with a 0.00 era.
Six-PackThanks to Schmardel's performance, the Seahawks are tied for third in the nation as six different players have recorded a save this season. Florida and Texas Tech have each had seven different players notch a save.
Saint Peter's On Staten IslandWagner has now won five-straight games against the Peacocks on Staten Island by a combined 53-14 score and are 7-1, all-time, against the Jersey City-based institution at the ballpark.
MAAC DominationThe Seahawks finished up the season 3-1 against the MAAC this season.
Trey Saves The Day/SeriesDown to his final strike in Saturday's nightcap with
Trey Nicosia laced his career-high third hit, a double to left field, to tie the score with NJIT at 2-2 before the Green & White scored the game-winning run one play later. The very next day, Nicosia again recorded three hits in Wagner's series-clinching 9-7 win against the Highlanders.
All-Time Against NJITThe Seahawks are now 5-2, all-time, against NJIT since the Highlanders moved up to Division I.
Rutgers ReunionAfter claiming the final two games against NJIT, the Seahawks continued their winning ways with a 10-7 come-from-behind win against Rutgers and former head coach Joe Litterio. The Green & White rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to post one of its most impressive win of the season.
Offense RollingIn its last 10 games, the Wagner offense has notched double-figures in runs three times after failing to do so once in the first 25 games. Additionally, the Seahawks matched their season-high with 20 hits against a Rutgers team that entered with a five-game winning streak.
Offensive ExplosionWagner has scored 60 runs over its last 10 games after recording just 64 in its first 25.
Top-Ranked Cal PolyOne of the reasons that the Seahawks struggled to score runs in the early part of the season was due to a tough schedule that saw seven-straight games against nationally ranked teams. Three of those came against a Cal Poly squad that is 35-5 and ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Five-Hit PerformanceFreshman
Nick Mascelli led the way against the Scarlet Knights by going 5-for-6 with a run while becoming the first Green & White player to record five in a game since Seth Boyd notched five in a 14-4 win at Fairleigh Dickinson on April 11, 2010. During his current six game hitting streak, Mascelli is batting .538 (14-for-26) with five walks, four runs and three RBI.
This Season ...Mascelli leads the team in batting average (.328), hits (43), runs (19), walks (22), OBP (.439) and multi-hit games (12).
Smith ReturnsAfter missing the previous four games due to injury, senior
Chris Smith went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and a walk vs. RU.
Taking Over The Two SpotSince moving to the second spot in the order, junior
Jason Gordon is hitting .429 (9-for-21) over the last five games.
Maz Breaks It OpenIn Wagner's most recent win, junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz broke the game wide open with his two-out, two-run single. The Garden State native finished with four RBI while capping a Seahawk offensive outburst that netted eight two-out runs.
Lost In The ShuffleThe bullpen allowed just one earned run with seven strikeouts over 8.2 innings in their win over the Scarlet Knights.
A Day Of FirstsWagner posted its first-ever win against a team from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) while junior RHP
Steven Bloodworth picked up his first win of the season with three strikeouts over 2.2 scoreless innings of work - both of which are season-highs. Over his last nine games, Bloodworth has a 1.38 ERA with nine strikeouts, against just one walk, over 13.0 innings.
All-TimeThe Seahawks are now 3-19-2, all-time, against Rutgers with the Scarlet Knights representing a different league during each Green & White win. Wagner previously defeated RU in 1982 (Eastern Athletic Conference) and 2011 (Big East). Next year Rutgers will join the Big Ten.
Adams In The Thick Of ThingsSophomore RHP
Mike Adams has had a hand in all three of the Seahawks' three-straight wins, recording two saves and a win thanks to allowing just one hit with five strikeouts over 4.0 scoreless innings of relief. On the year, he has four of the Green & White's nine saves while striking out 18 in 16.2 innings of work.
Casey Coming On StrongDespite seeing his 23.2 inning scoreless streak snapped in a no-decision against NJIT, senior RHP
Ryan Casey has been lights out over his last three starts - all Wagner wins. During that time he has a 0.91 ERA with 10 strikeouts over 19.2 innings. On the year, he paces the Seahawks with a 3.52 ERA over a team-leading 53.2 innings of work.
Bottom Of The Order Coming Up BigNicosia, junior
Zack Yesko and sophomore
John Lynn have combined for five three-hit games over the last five games after notching just one since their arrival on campus. Since returning from injury, Nicosia is hitting .364 (8-for-22) in five games. Yesko has turned it on over this last two games, going 5-for-8, highlighted by a career-high three hits against Rutgers, while raising his average 65 points in the process. Lynn, meanwhile, has been on an absolute tear, hitting .522 (12-for-23) with six RBI over his last seven games with three three-hit performances during that time.
Long Improves To 2-0Freshman RHP
Nolan Long improved to a perfect 2-0 this season with another solid outing at NJIT. Long allowed just three runs over 5.0 innings against the Highlanders while collecting his second victory in as many weeks.
Time FliesEight years ago on April 22, 2006, current New York Yankee
Andrew Bailey made his first start following Tommy John surgery against Central Connecticut. Opposing Bailey in the game was Evan Scribner, who like Bailey has pitched for the Oakland A's.
Last Year Against The Blue Devils ...
Wagner and Central Connecticut split four games. Junior
Nick Dini led the way for the Seahawks, hitting a blistering .538 (7-for-13) with three runs, three RBI, two stolen bases and two walks while posting a blistering .625 OBP. Senior
Shaun Flynn also had a nice weekend, batting .333 (4-for-12) with three RBI and two walks.
Dini & Flynn ...Dini continues to lead Wagner in home runs (3), RBI (19) and stolen bases (14) while throwing out 45.0 percent (9-of-20) of runners on the bases. Flynn, meanwhile, leads the Green & White with five multi-RBI games while ranking second with 11 multi-hit games.
On The MoundSophomore LHP
Paul Mammino fell just two outs short of tossing a no-hitter in the series finale against CCSU, finishing up with five strikeouts while yielding just one hit in a complete game victory. For his efforts he was named College Baseball Insider (CBI) Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week.
Scouting CCSUCentral Connecticut is led by reigning NEC Player of the Week J.P. Sportman, who is hitting .327 with 19 runs, five doubles, one triple, three home runs and 13 RBI. Josh Ingham is batting a team-best .337 while Dominic Severino checks in with a .299 average to round out the top Blue Devils on offense. On the mound, CCSU has one of the top starting duos in seniors Nick Neumann (2-3, 3.51 ERA) and Tom Coughlin (3-3, 3.12 ERA) while Ingham is arguably the top closer in the league (7 saves, 0.79 ERA).
Coughlin, Neumann, Ingham Vs. WagnerThe trio of pitchers listed above are a combined 2-0 with four saves, 27 strikeouts and a 1.15 ERA over 39.0 innings against the Seahawks.
InterestingIn a rare occurrence the projected game four starters for both Wagner (Long) and Central Connecticut (Matt Blandino) have each been drafted. Blandino was tabbed by the Cincinnati Reds a year ago while Long was selected by the San Francisco Giants in 2012.
Wagner Earns Series Victory Over FDU For Second-Straight YearFor the second-straight season, Wagner earned a series victory against Fairleigh Dickinson by a 3-1 count and is now tied for second place in the NEC at 5-3.
Offense ExplodesAll nine regulars hit safely as Seahawks erupted 12 runs and 17 hits en route to posting an easy 12-5 victory over the Knights in the series opener on Friday. The support was more than enough for Casey (2-4), who struck out five while yielding just an unearned run on six hits over 7.0 innings.
Casey During NEC Play ...Is an impressive 10-5 with 58 strikeouts, against 24 walks, and a 3.74 ERA over 130 innings. Additionally, when pitching at home during that time Casey is 6-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 35 strikeouts, against just 11 walks, over 72.0 innings.
Law Of AveragesOne game after crossing the plate 12 times, Wagner could only manage one run of offense in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. However, that was all junior LHP
Matt Morris needed as the hard-throwing lefty spun his first collegiate complete game shutout. In the Seahawks' 1-0 victory, he limited Knight hitters to a miniscule .167 average (4-of-24) and did not permit a runner to reach third safely over his dominating seven-inning performance.
NEC Comes Calling ... AgainFor the second time this season Morris was selected as the NEC Pitcher of the Week, sharing the honor with Bryant's Craig Schlitter. Morris notched his first honor after pitching a career-high 7.1 innings in the Green & White's 2-1 victory over Army.
InterestingCasey and Morris each didn't yield an earned run to FDU for the second-straight season.
Long Clinches SeriesAfter dropping a 7-3 decision in the third game of the series, Wagner rallied for a 5-1 win over FDU in the series finale between the teams. Long clinched the series with the Seahawks' third dominating performance from a starting pitcher on the weekend as the Green & White hoopster yielded just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings en route to his first collegiate victory. Long, like Morris two starts before him, limited Fairleigh Dickinson to a miniscule .167 average (4-for-24).
Man Of Many GlovesDini is leading Wagner in positions played (5) as the 2013 NEC First Team selection has seen time at catcher (20 games), second base (5 games), shortstop (1 games), third base (6 games) and DH (1 game).
NEC OpenersThe Green & White posted a 6-2 victory over LIU Brooklyn in its NEC opener and has now won 10-of-12 conference-opening tilts dating back to the 2002 season. Battaglia has now recorded 9.2 scoreless innings of relief for his career against LIU Brooklyn, yielding just five hits.
Facing The BestAfter an 8-4 setback at No. 28 Seton Hall, eight of Wagner's 23 losses have come to teams ranked among the top-30 nationally. In those games, Mascelli is batting a team-best .379 (11-for-29) with four multi-hit games.
ImpressiveThe opposition from the Green & White's first five weekend series' (Elon, Texas State, Army, No. 8 Cal Poly, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara) have a combined 135-61 (.689) record.
