Newark, NJ - Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep), junior
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA / State College Area) and classmate
Zack Yesko (Mukwonago, WI / Mukwonago) each had three hits to lead Wagner to a 9-7 win over NJIT in the series finale between the teams at Riverfront Stadium.
With the victory, the Seahawks take the three-game series between the teams while improving to 11-23 as the Highlanders fall to 11-16.
The Green & White opened the scoring in the second inning when
John Lynn (Wallingford, PA / Salesianum School (DE)) reached on an error before later scoring on a defensive miscue.
Wagner then blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth inning while batting around. Yesko led off with a single before moving to third when Nicosia reached via a two-base error. Sophomore
Vaughn Champion (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) followed by poking a single to center field while scoring Yesko. After the first out was recorded, juniors
Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) and
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) followed with RBI singles while extending the visitor's advantage out to 4-0. Lynn would later plate Gordon with a sacrifice fly before Dini scampered home on a wild pitch to cap the scoring while giving the Green & White a 6-0 lead.
NJIT finally got on the board in the bottom part of the fourth when Stephan Halibej scored on a wild pitch only to see Wagner answer with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth while chasing Highlander RHP Matt Coughlin from the game.
Yesko and Nicosia each singled before moving to third on a Champion sacrifice bunt. Yesko would then score on a wild pitch before Mascelli plated Nicosia with a RBI singles in extending the lead out to 8-1. However, the damage could have been greater as freshman RHP
Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / South Kent) left a pair on the bases just as he had done the previous frame.
NJIT got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Mike Rampone RBI double and a Ed Charlton sacrifice fly while trimming the Seahawk lead to 8-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Highlanders struck again for two more runs in making it an 8-5 game.
Nicosia then led off the top of the seventh with a bunt single before stealing second and would come around to score on Mascelli's second RBI single of the game to make it 9-5.
NJIT immediately answered in the bottom of the seventh on Scott Brosman's two-run double to left field.
However, that would be the last hit of the game for the Highlanders as junior RHP
Max Schmardel (Eatontown, NJ / Monmouth Regional) easily got the final out before recording a scoreless eighth.
Sophomore RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) then fired a scoreless ninth to get his third save of the year while closing out the game and the series.
Gordon and Junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) also recorded a pair of hits as the Seahawks rapped out 15 on the afternoon.
Long (2-0) allowed three runs on two hits over 5.0 innings while winning for the second-straight week.
Coughlin (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits over 4.1 innings.
Wagner will next host Rutgers and former head coach Joe Litterio on Wednesday, April 23 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch slated for 3:30 pm.
