Brooklyn, NY - Wagner picked up its first win of the year by a 2-1 count over Army in the first game of a doubleheader at MCU Field.
Senior LHP
Matt Morris (1-2) (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) allowed just one unearned run while striking out three over a career-high 7.1 innings of work while scoring runs in the fourth and sixth innings before holding off a late Black Knight charge.
Army looked as though it would strike first in the opening inning as Jon Crucitti walked and stole second before being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, Morris hunkered down and struck out the next batter before inducing an inning-ending ground out.
The Black Knights would put runners in scoring position in each of the next two frames only to come up short each time.
In the top of the fourth inning, junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) opened up the scoring with a solo home run while also recording the first Seahawk hit of the game.
The Green & White added to the lead with another score in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) walked before stealing second. Later in the frame, Smith would come around to score when junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) drew bases loaded walk to extend the Wagner lead to 2-0.
Army would finally get on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning as Jon Crucitti scored on a fielding error while forcing Morris from the game. Sophomore RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) evaded further damage by getting the final two outs and leaving the would-be tying run in scoring position.
Adams then closed out his first career save by inducing an game-ending double play grounder.
The Seahawks, which recorded just two hits, were led by Dini, who drew two walks in addition to his sixth career home run while reaching safely in three of his four trips to the plate.
Alex Robinett was the tough-luck losing pitcher, falling to 0-2 on the year despite striking out 11 and yielding just two runs, one earned, on one hit over 8.0 innings of work.
