Brooklyn, NY - Nick Dignacco (3-0) struck out eight over 6.0 scoreless innings of work to lead Army to a 4-0 win over Wagner in the first of three games between the teams at MCU Park.
The efficient lefty allowed five hits with one walk before giving way to righty Brian Hapeman, who allowed just two runners over the final 3.0 frames in notching his first save of the year.
With the victory, the Black Knights improve to 6-4 while the Seahawks fall to 0-7.
The Green & White threatened to open the scoring in the top of the first inning as senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) clouted a one-out double but would end up being stranded 90 feet from home while setting a troubling trend for the offense.
Wagner would leave runners in scoring position in two of the next three innings before Army broke through in the bottom of the fourth.
Mark McCants led off with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice. Brock Davidson then opened up the scoring with a RBI ground out to first.
The Seahawks again appeared to be in prime position to finally dent the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC)) clouted a one-out triple but was stranded when Dignacco induced a grounder to third before ending the frame with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Black Knights put the game away with a big two-out rally that netted three runs and was capped by Harold Earls' two-run triple.
Smith would then triple with one out in the eighth inning only to be stranded on the bases yet again as the Green & White squandered their last major scoring opportunity of the game.
Jon Crucitti and Earls combined to go 4-for-8 with three RBI to lead the way on offense for Army.
Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to pace the six-hit Wagner attack.
Senior RHP
Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
