Elon, NC - Elon broke open a one-run game with three in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to posting a 7-3 victory over Wagner in the series finale between the teams at Latham Park.
With the victory, the defending NCAA Regional participant Phoenix improve to 5-1 while the Seahawks fall to 0-3.
Elon opened the scoring with a second-inning run but the damage could have been worse. Tyler McVicar led off with a double down the left field line before moving to third on a single. One out later McVicar would score the game's first on Andy Moore's RBI single. The Phoenix would proceed to load the bases only to strand all three runners when sophomore LHP
Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) induced an inning-ending force out.
In the top of the fourth inning, Elon added to the lead with three runs on just two hits and two errors in jumping out to what appeared to be a comfortable 4-0 lead.
After
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) opened the game with a single, the Wagner offense was put on ice over the next six frame while failing to record another hit until threatening in the seventh. Junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) singled with two outs before sophomore
John Lynn (Wallingford, PA / Salesianum School (DE)) notched his first collegiate hit. Unfortunately, the pair was stranded on first-and-second when LHP Jake Stalzer capped his impressive 7.0-inning performance with a strikeout.
The Seahawks finally broke through in the top of the eighth inning with three runs on just one hit. Freshman
Evan Fardella (Bartonsville, PA / Pocono Mountain East), Mascelli and junior
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) all worked walks in loading up the bases with no out. Junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) followed with a run-scoring single that forced in Fardella while putting the Green & White on the board. Mascelli then scored on a wild pitch before Wasilick crossed the plate on a
Shaun Flynn's (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) RBI ground out to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Unfortunately, the Phoenix answered with three runs of their own in the bottom part of the frame in jumping in front 7-3.
Elon 's Ryan Pennell then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth in picking up his first save of the season.
Mascelli led the way for Wagner, reaching base safely three times with a hit and two walks while scoring the lone Seahawk run of the afternoon. In his first collegiate weekend, the Garden State native hit safely in all three games while posting a team-best .538 OBP with two runs.
Mammino (0-1) was solid, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings of work. Junior
Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) and sophomore
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) were outstanding out of the bullpen, striking out four over 4.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball.
Quinn Bower, Sebastian Gomez and Casey Jones went a combined 5-for-12 with three runs, three RBI and two walks in leading a 12-hit Elon offense.
Stalzer improved 2-0 on the season, allowing three hits over 7.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Wagner returns to action with three games next weekend at Texas State starting on Friday, February 28 at 7:30 pm (EST).
