Elon, NC - Elon scored three times in the first before using a pair of four-run frames in defeating Wagner 11-1 in the second of a three-game series at Latham Park.
With the victory, the Phoenix improve to 4-1 while the Seahawks fall to 0-2.
Wagner struck first in the opening frame with a pair of hits. Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) opened the game up with a single before advancing to third on an errant pick-up. The rookie would then scamper home on a wild pitch while staking the Seahawks to the early 1-0 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived as Elon answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, getting on the board with Casey Jones' two-run, bases loaded double before extending the lead out to 3-1 on Tyler McVicar's sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix added to the lead with four runs in opening up a 7-1 lead before the Seahawks threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) doubled with one out before junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) singled him over to third. However, Elon starting pitcher RHP Lucas Bakker responded with a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending force out.
Wagner again threatened in the top of the seventh as junior
Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) singled before classmate
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) doubled down the left field line. Unfortunately, the pair was stranded when Bakker capped his seven-inning outing with strikeout number nine.
The Phoenix then added four runs in the bottom of the frame in providing the final 11-1 score.
Mascelli went 2-for-4 with a run while Gordon also was 2-for-4 with a double to lead an eight-hit Seahawk attack.
Senior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) was saddled with the loss, striking out three while yielding seven runs, four earned, on eight hits over 3.2 innings of action.
Sebastian Gomez and Jones each had three hits to pace the pace Elon.
Bakker did not walk a batter over his seven innings of work and allowed just one run on eight hits in moving to 1-0 on the season.
The teams will conclude their three game series tomorrow at 1:30 pm.
