Elon, NC - Elon (3-1) broke open what was a close game with nine runs in the fourth inning en route to posting a 14-2 victory over Wagner (0-1) in non-conference action at Latham Park.
The Phoenix opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second before adding an unearned tally in the third in route to building an early 3-0 advantage.
Elon then broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with nine runs, seven of which were unearned, while sending 15 batters to the plate.
The Seahawks would respond with their first run of the year in the top of the fifth inning. Junior
Tommy Mazurkiewicz doubled down the third base line on the first pitch he saw before moving to third on a ground out. Classmate
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA / State College Area) then plated Mazurkiewicz with a single through the left side.
Freshman LHP
Brad Currao (Howell, NJ / St. Rose) then proceeded to shut down the potent Phoenix offense over the next 3.0 innings, striking out three while yielding just one walk.
Wagner would pick up its second and final run of the day in the top of the seventh when junior
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) scored on a
Chris Smith (Sr., Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) RBI single.
Elon would add two runs in the bottom of the eighth in providing the final 14-2 score.
Smith went 1-for-2 with two walks, a RBI and a stolen base to pace a seven-hit Seahawk attack.
Senior RHP
Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the pitcher of record for the Green & White, yielding 10 runs, four earned, on nine hits over 3.2 innings of work.
Chris King went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBi while Sebastian Gomez scored three runs to lead the way for the Phoenix.
RHP Michael Elefanta improved to 2-0 with the win, striking out four while yielding one run on four hits over 6.0 innings.
The teams will continue their series tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
