Miller's Late-Game Heroics Lift Wagner To 8-7 Game-One Win

Junior Ian Miller (Jr., Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) RBI single in the bottom of the seventh capped Wagner's dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind win over Mount St. Mary's in the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 22-23 and 14-8 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Mountaineers fall to 9-29 and 4-18 in the league.

Junior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca / Burlington CC) got Wagner's big seventh-inning rally going with a ground rule double to left center, before moving to third on Tommy Mazurkiewicz's (So., Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) sacrifice bunt. Senior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) then tied the game up at 7-7 with a RBI double that chased home Flynn. After Keel moved to third on a wild pitch, senior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) was intentionally walked while setting the stage for the Seahawks' late-game heroics. Miller laced the third pitch he saw from Chad Diehl over the rightfielder's head to score Keel and complete the Seahawks' five-run comeback.

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning when Mo Moriarty singled home Tom Healy, before scoring on a passed ball.

Wagner would get one of those runs back In the bottom part of the frame when Flynn singled home Ben Ruta (Fr., West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South), who had led off the frame with a single.

The Mountaineers then added to the lead in the top of the third inning with three unearned runs while pushing their lead out to 5-1.

After evading a Seahawk threat in the bottom part of the frame, the Mount made it a 6-1 game with another unearned run in the top of the fourth.

Wagner then broke through with four runs while batting around in the bottom of the frame in trimming the deficit to 6-5. Flynn and Mazurkiewicz led off with singles, before moving to second-and-third on a fly out. After Alfano loaded up the bases with a walk, Miller singled to the shortstop to score Flynn. Junior Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth CC (IA)) followed with a two-run single through the left side, plating Mazurkiewicz and Alfano in the process. Sophomore Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) capped the scoring with a bloop single to left, chasing home Miller while cutting the deficit to 6-5.

After the Mountaineers got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth inning, the Seahawks answered with a run in the bottom part of the frame. Flynn led off with a triple, before scoring on a Mazurkiewicz fielder's choice grounder.

Sophomore RHP Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) then entered in relief and promptly silenced the Mount's bats over the final two frames while helping set up the Green & White's dramatic walk-off win.

Flynn went 4-for-4 with three runs and a RBI while falling a home run short of the cycle to lead a 15-hit Wagner attack that saw all nine regulars hit safely. Miller also had another big game, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. a

Bloodworth (1-1) earned the win, allowing just one hit over 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. Junior LHP Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) was solid over his 5.0 innings of work, striking out six while allowing just one earned run on four hits.

Healy paced the Mountaineers, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI while Jay Knight also was 2-for-3 with two runs.

Diehl (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings.

Wagner also broke the school-record for stolen bases when Miller swiped second base in the first inning, before Mazurkiwicz notched the Seahawks' 100th steal of the year in the fifth.
