Staten Island, NY - Bryant defeated Wagner for the second-straight game by a 2-1 score in taking the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
In defeat, the Seahawks fall to 24-29 and 16-14 in the NEC while the Bulldogs improve to 38-15-1 and 25-5 in the league.
Pitching was the name of the game in the opener as LHP Craig Schillter struck out four and allowed just one run on four hits over 6.1 dominating innings of work in improving to 9-3 on the year. Junior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs on seven hits in a complete game 7.0- inning effort.
Bryant opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first as John Mullen delivered a two-out double down the left field line to plate Jordan Mountford.
Wagner threatened in the bottom of the second as graduate student
Chase Gray (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) and freshman
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South) led off the frame with singles to left field. Unfortunately, the Seahawks would come away empty handed while stranding a Gray at third.
The Bulldogs added to the lead when Jordan Mountford led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to right field.
Schlitter, meanwhile, settled down after allowing a pair of singles in the second and retired the next 16 batters he faced before the Green & White mounted a seventh-inning rally.
Gray doubled with one out, before scoring Wagner first run when Ruta singled up the middle. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Seahawks would get as Bryant closer Salvatore Lisanti retired the final two batters of the game without incident en route to posting his ninth save of the season.
Gray went 2-for-3 with a run and a double while Ruta was also 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace the Green & White.
Mountford went 3-for-4 with a home run and both Bulldog runs to lead the way for the visitors.
