West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth scored seven unanswered runs en route to a 7-3 victory over Wagner in the first game of a doubleheader at the MU Baseball Field.
The Hawks improve to 20-12 and 12-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) with the win while the Seahawks fall to 12-19 and 5-6 in the league.
After scoring just three runs in yesterday's doubleheader, Wagner struck for three first-inning runs. Junior
Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) led off with a four-pitch walk, before classmate
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth CC) was plunked. After the pair advanced to second-and-third, sophomore
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) opened the scoring with a single to right field to plate Miller while moving Smith to third. Freshman
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South) then blooped a double to left field, scoring Smith while moving Dini to second and chasing MU starter RHP Adam Yunginger from the game. Later in the frame, the Seahawks capped the scoring with when Dini scored on a two-out fielding error.
Monmouth immediately answered with a pair of runs in the bottom part of the frame to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Both offenses would quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Hawks scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead. MU would add a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning to provide the final 7-3 final.
Monmouth reliever LHP Frank Trimarco (3-0) earned the win, striking out six while yielding just three hits and a walk over 7.0 scoreless innings.
Freshman RHP
Mike Adams (Absecon, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) fell to 1-4 on the year, allowing four runs on three hits over 4.1 innings of work.
Both teams recorded five hits with the Hawks' Owen Stewart leading all players with three hits to go along with three RBI and two runs.
