Notes:
New Jersey State Of Mind
The Seahawks are 6-2 this season against teams from New Jersey.
Streak Snapped
Wagner dropped a heartbreaking 13-12 decision to FDU in the teams' series finale on Sunday, snapping the Seahawks' school-record eight game winning streak. In the run, the Green & White batted a blistering .373 while posting a 3.27 ERA.
Streak Snapped x2
Junior
Ian Miller was robbed twice against Seton Hall, as the Keystone State native had his career-high 16 game hitting streak snapped. During the 16-game sample Miller batted .464 (32-for-69) with 17 runs, 18 RBI, 16 stolen bases and 10 multi-hit games while raising his average 137 points. He is now batting .355 with a team-best 21 runs, 22 RBI and 27 stolen bases.
A Day In The Life Of
Miller was recently profiled by Wagner's Day In The Life of Series ... Click
HERE for the segment.
Did You Know?
The game against Seton Hall was the third this season that Miller did not reach base safely and just the second game that he didn't reach base at all.
“This Is The End, My Only Friend The End”
Wagner (12-16; 5-3 NEC) and Monmouth (17-12; 9-3 NEC) will be playing for the final time as members of the NEC as the Hawks will be moving to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) next season.
Last Weekend
The Green & White took three-of-four from FDU while MU swept a four-game series at Mount St. Mary's.
“Picture Me Rolling”
Both teams have been hot of late with Wagner winning 8-of-10 and Monmouth 9-of-11.
Despite That
The Seahawks have lost each of their last two games, but it wasn't due to the play of
Chris Smith. The junior is 7-for-12 with seven RBI, three runs, a double and a home run during that time. On the year, the Sunshine State native is batting a team-best .361 with 19 runs, seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, nine stolen bases and 19 walks.
Casey On The Mound
Junior RHP
Ryan Casey won his second-straight game while recording his first career 9.0 inning complete game in Wagner's 5-3 win over FDU in game one of last weekend's four-game set. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 20.1 innings of work and is now 2-3 with 25 strikeouts over 45.0 innings of work - both which lead the team – and a 4.40 ERA.
The Return Of Matty Mo
After missing most of the last two seasons due to injury, junior LHP
Matt Morris has returned to action with a flourish, striking out 12 over his last 9.0 innings of work. Against FDU, his nine strikeouts were the most by a Wagner pitcher this year and the most since
Ryan Van Spronsen struck out nine against LIU Brooklyn on April 13, 2012.
Adams Wins His First
Freshman RHP
Mike Adams struck out two over 5.0 innings of two-hit ball in picked up his first career win last week against FDU. During NEC play, Adams has struck out seven while yielding just three hits over 10.1 innings of work.
Closing It Out
Over his last five games, sophomore RHP
Anthony Battaglia is a perfect 3-for-3 in save situations while posting a 1.59 ERA with seven strikeouts over 11.2 innings of work.
Mad Maz
Sophomore
Tommy Mazurkiewicz has been on fire of late, batting .481 (13-for-27) with six multi-hit games, 11 RBI, five runs, three doubles and four walks. On the year, he is hitting .316 with a team-best nine doubles.
Scouting The Hawks
Monmouth is a balanced offensive unit that is hitting a NEC-best .294 with five players batting above .300 while featuring a pitching staff that has produced a 3.94 ERA. Unlike Hawk teams of the past, MU has stolen just 12 bases (22 attempts) but ranks among the upper third of the league in runs, hits, home runs and slugging percentage.
McGee Making It Happen
After dominating as a freshman out of the bullpen, LHP Andrew McGee had an up and down season as a starting pitcher in his second collegiate campaign. However, the now-seasoned McGee seems to have figured things out in his third season in West Long Branch. McGee is arguably the finest pitcher in the league, having posted a 5-1 record with 38 strikeouts, against just nine walks, four complete games and a 2.08 ERA over 56.1 innings of work.
Miller, McGee Team Up
Last summer, Wagner's
Ian Miller and Monmouth's Andrew McGee were teammates on the Matsu Miners of the Alaska League. Both players stood out in America's 49th state with Miller batting .287 with a league-leading 36 stolen bases while McGee struck out 39 over 38.0 innings of work.
Last Year Against Monmouth
The teams split four meetings, with sophomore
Nick Dini pacing the Seahawks with a .385 (5-for-13) average. Senior
Jayson Keel also had a solid weekend, batting .308 (4-for-13). Casey struck out five in a complete game 7.0-inning performance to defeat McGee and MU in game one of a doubleheader, before senior
Dakota Dvorak earned the win in the nightcap.
Last Time At Monmouth
The Hawks swept all four meetings at the MU Baseball Field in 2011 by a combined 33-16 score and have taken the last five games between the teams in West Long Branch dating back to 2009.
The All-Time Series
MU holds an all-time record of 60-37 against Wagner, including going 34-12 against the Seahawks in West Long Branch.
The Dean's List
Under legendary 20th year head coach Dean Ehehalt, Monmouth is 40-30, all-time, against the Green & White, including going 22-9 at home.
Carone, Collazo Return Home
Wagner head coach
Jim Carone and assistant
Chris Collazo both played their collegiate baseball under the direction of Ehehalt.
Carone ...
Lettered for four years for the Hawks from 2000-2003 and was the 2002 Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year and helped his MU teams go 11-4 against the Seahawks.
Collazo ...
Lettered for four years at MU from 2006-2009 and was the 2009 NEC Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. He helped Monmouth to the 2007 and 2009 NCAA Regionals, but was just 8-8 as a player against the Green & White.
Steal City
Wagner has 377 stolen bases over the last four years while leading the conference each season and this year has been no different. The Seahawks are again at the top of the league rankings with 62 stolen bases (22nd NCAA) in just 28 games. At its current rate of 2.21 steals per game (18th NCAA), Wagner would finish with 121 steals while bettering the previous record of 98 set in 2010. All told, since the start of the 2009 campaign the Seahawks are 420-for-533 on stolen base attempts.
Fast & Furious
Miller has personified the Green & White's running game, ranking third nationally with 0.96 steals per game and fourth with 27 total steals. His season total is also good for the eighth-most in school history and is better than the team totals of Quinnipiac, LIU Brooklyn, Central Connecticut, Monmouth and FDU.
At The Ballpark
Wagner holds an all-time record of 79-41 (.658) at R.C.B.B. since the program began calling the stadium home for the 2008 campaign. Additionally, the Seahawks are 52-29 (.642) during NEC games and 24-12 (.667) in non-conference match-ups.
Bailey On The Bump
2006 Wagner College graduate
Andrew Bailey made his 2013 debut for the Boston and struck out Kevin Youkilis on a 95 mph fastball and has been outstanding through four games, striking out six over 3.1 innings of one-hit ball.
Pacing The Junior Circuit
Bailey leads the American League with four holds while pitching out of a set-up role.
Bailey vs. Carone
Bailey and Carone squared off during the 2003 season and it was Bailey that got the better of Carone, leading Wagner to an 8-3 victory over Monmouth (4/23/03). The Red Sox reliever struck out six over 5.2 innings of one-run ball while the Seahawk coach was tagged for four earned runs over four frames.
2013 NEC Poll
Bryant was tabbed first with CCSU second, Monmouth third, Sacred Heart fourth, LIU Brooklyn fifth, Wagner sixth, FDU seventh, Quinnipiac eighth and the Mount ninth.
