Norfolk, VA - Freshman RHP
Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) earned his first collegiate victory on the mound and sophomore
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, leading Wagner to a 4-3 victory over Norfolk State in game two of a doubleheader.
Mammino (1-0) fell one out short of his first complete game, striking out three over 6.2 innings of work while yielding three runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks.
After stranding a runner 90 feet from home in the first inning and leaving the bases loaded in the second, the Seahawks finally broke through in the third inning with two runs. Junior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca /Burlington County College) led off with a single. After moving over to second on a
Jayson Keel (Sr., Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) sacrifice, Flynn was plated on a Dini RBI double. Dini then advanced to third on a
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth Community College (IA)) single through the left side, before scoring on a
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (So., Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) sacrifice bunt.
Mammino retired the first eight batters he faced, before working out of trouble in the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans finally got to Mammino with a Chase Kyriacou sacrifice fly while cutting the lead in half at 2-1.
Wagner added a pair of what would prove to be a pair of valuable insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore
Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) led off with a double, before advancing to third one out later on a pass ball. After the second out of the inning, Keel was hit by a pitch and stole second. Dini then scored Wasilick with an infield single to second base, extending the lead out to 3-1. Keel would come around to score one batter later on a throwing error by the third baseman, making it a 4-1 game.
Norfolk State would rally in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally, scoring two runs while forcing Mammino from the game. With the tying run on first base, sophomore RHP
Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) entered and calmly retired the only batter he faced in earning his first collegiate save.
The Seahawks improve to 2-7 on the year while the Spartans fall to 4-9.
Wagner will now go for the series victory tomorrow in the finale at 12:00 pm.
