Norfolk State Tops Wagner 2-1 In Game One

Box Score / Box Score (PDF)

Norfolk, VA -
Chase Kyriacou lifted Norfolk State to a 2-1 victory over Wagner in game one of today's doubleheader with a walk-off RBI double at Marty L Miller Field.

Junior RHP Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was outstanding on the mound for the Seahawks, striking out two while yielding just one run over a career-high 8.0 innings of work.

Wagner struck first with a run in the opening frame. Junior Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) led off with an infield single, before stealing second and third. Senior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) then brought home the speedy Miller with a RBI double down the right field line.

The Spartans tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the damage could have been a lot worse. Cody Ellis led off with a double, before moving to third on a sacrifice. Ellis would then come around to score on a Zach Markel RBI double. Norfolk State would proceed to load up the bases, only to be denied when Casey fanned Kyriacou for the final out.

After plating their first-inning run, the Seahawk offense was stymied for the rest of the game as Norfolk State's RHP Chris Horne allowed just two runners to reach safely (hit/HBP) over his final seven innings of work.

The Spartans threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting runners on first-and-third and just one out. Casey, however, was up to the challenge, inducing a pop up and a ground out to keep Norfolk State off the scoreboard.

Wagner had a chance to break the 1-1 deadlock in the top of the eighth inning as junior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca /Burlington County College) singled, before moving to second on a Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South) sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, Flynn was left stranded as Horne struck out the next batter, before inducing an inning-ending ground out.

Horne would exit after eight strong, yielding one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans broke through when Kyle Vaas walked, before moving to second on a sacrifice. He was then plated on Kyriacou's aforementioned RBI double.

Righthander Troy Applin earned the win, striking out one over a scoreless inning of work while sophomore RHP Anthony Battaglia (1-1) yielded the game-winning run in falling to 1-1 on the season.

Norfolk State improved to 4-8 with the win, while Wagner fell to 1-7.
