Seahawks Sweep Series From Saint Peter's With 7-5 Win

Box Score / Box Score (PDF) / Ian Miller Postgame Interview

Staten Island, NY -
Wagner swept its weekend series from Saint Peter's with a 7-5 victory in the series finale at Richmond County Bank Ballpark (R.C.B.B.) while completing the program's first-ever three-game non-conference series sweep.

The Seahawks' series sweep was also their first since taking all four from Quinnipiac in 2010 while winning their fourth-straight game en route to improving to 8-14. The Peacocks fall to 7-15 on the year.

Wagner opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Junior Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) worked the count full before drawing a walk. The speedy centerfielder then stole second, before coming around to score on a Chris Smith (Jr., Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth CC (IA)) double to left field.

The Seahawks blew the game open in their next trip to the plate, scoring six runs while sending 10 batters to the plate and knocking starting pitcher John Leiter from the game. Senior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) led off with a single, before junior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca / Burlington CC) was plunked. Following an out, sophomore Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) drew a walk to load up the bases. Classmate Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) and freshman Dan Wasilick (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) followed with walks of their own to force in a pair of runs. Miller followed with a two-run single to make it 5-1. Smith then added a run-scoring double and Dini a RBI single to cap the scoring while giving Green & White an insurmountable 7-0 lead.

On the mound, freshman LHP Paul Mammino (Hillsbourgh, NJ / Hillsborough) was in complete control, facing the minimum 15 batters over his five innings of work. After a perfect 1-2-3 first, Robert Moore collected the lone Saint Peter's hit off Mammino, but was thrown out at second on a perfect throw from Alfano. After allowing a one-out walk in the third, Mammino erased William Rawson with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

In the fourth inning, Wagner continued its fine play in the field as Mazurkiewicz made a leaping grab for the first out, before Miller robbed James Smith of extra bases with a diving grab in center. Wasilick ended the frame with a nice backhand grab, before firing to first from the final out. Mammino then exited after another 1-2-3 frame in the fifth inning.

Saint Peter's rallied with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to trim the deficit to 7-4.

The Peacocks would continue to fight and slice another run off the deficit in the eighth inning.

Sophomore RHP Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea) entered in the ninth and promptly retired the first two batters, before yielding a single to Vicent Maietta. After falling behind Brian Schroeder 3-0, he battled back with two-straight strikes before getting the Seahawks' first strikeout of the day to end the game.

Mammino (3-0) allowed just one hit and one walk over his 5.0 innings of work and has now scattered just five hits over his last three outings, which have spanned 11.0 scoreless frames. Battaglia earned his third save of the season with a scoreless frame.

Smith paced Wagner's nine-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run while Miller extended his hitting streak to 11 games, finishing up 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Rounding out the Green & White's multi-hit performers was Mazurkiewicz, who finished up 2-for-3 with a run.

Leiter (1-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits over 3.2 innings.

Wagner returns to action against 2012 NCAA Super Regional participant St. John's on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:00 pm in a game that will be streamed live through ESPN3.
