Seahawks Sweep Doubleheader From Saint Peter's With 13-0 Win

Box Score / Box Score (PDF) / Matt Morris Postgame Interview

Staten Island, NY -
After registering a thrilling one-run win in game one, Wagner left nothing to chance in game two with a decisive 13-0 victory over Saint Peter's in non-conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark (R.C.B.B). The Seahawks registered a season-high 13 runs and 19 hits en route to posting their most lopsided win since a 19-2 victory over Peacocks last season.

With the doubleheader sweep the Green & White has now won three three straight while improving to 7-14 while SPC falls to 7-14.

Lost amid the impressive offensive numbers was the pitching of Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional), as the junior right-hander struck out four over 7.0 scoreless frames en route to recording his first career shutout.

Ten different Wagner players hit safely led by junior Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan), who went 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI out of the leadoff spot as classmate Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca / Burlington CC) added a career-high three hits while junior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) also notched three hits to round out the top performers for the Seahawks.

The Green & White wasted no time in taking control of the game as Flynn singled home Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth CC (IA)) to open the scoring in the top of the first. Miller extended the lead out to 3-0 with another clutch two-out hit, as the Keystone State native singled through the right side while plating sophomore Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) and freshman Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South).

Wagner added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs while knocking Saint Peter's starter Matthew Yuhas from the game. Ruta reached on a one-out error, before moving to second on a Dan Wasilick (So., Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) sacrifice. Miller then picked up Ruta with another two-out RBI single. Smith followed with walk, before Dini reached on an infield single as Miller scored when the shortstop booted the ball. Senior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) then capped the scoring with his 100th career hit, a single that brought around Smith.

The Seahawks added two more two-out tallies in the bottom of the fifth as Miller and freshman Trey Nicosia (State College, PA / State College Area) delivered run-scoring singles to push the lead out to 8-0.

Wagner would cap the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while batting around to provide the final 13-0 ledger.

Yuhas (3-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on 11 hits over 3.2 innings while Chris Grimes went 2-for-3 to lead Saint Peter's on offense.

The teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Saturday, March 30 at 1:00 pm.
