Staten Island, NY - Sacred Heart scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to posting a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Wagner in the second game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
With today's doubleheader split, the Seahawks move to 4-14 and 1-2 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Pioneers are 5-9 and 2-1 in the league.
Freshman LHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Holy Spirit) was on his game from the onset, retiring the first seven batters he faced, including four via strikeout, before allowing a third inning walk to Derick Horn. Horn was quickly erased on the ensuing play thanks to a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. Adams would carry a no-hitter into the fifth inning while facing just one over the minimum.
With both teams struggling to get anything going on offense, Wagner finally broke through with a run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, sophomore
Tommy Mazurkiewicz (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) doubled to right center. Classmate
Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archibishop Curley) followed with line-drive single through the left side while moving Mazurkiewicz to third base. Following a pop out, junior
Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) finally dented the scoreboard, plating Mazurkiewicz with a single through the right side.
In the game-changing sixth inning, Derrick Horn broke up Adams' no-hit bid with a single to left center. Dave Boisture then drew a free pass, before Jayson Sullivan moved the pair over to second-and-third with a sacrifice bunt. Bill McDonough tied the game up at 1-1 with a single to right field off reliever LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney), before Boisture scored the go-ahead run on a pass ball. John Murphy capped the scoring with a RBI triple down the right field line, plating McDonough while extending the lead out to 3-1.
Wagner's seventh-inning rally fell short Jeff Stoddard capped his complete game victory by inducing an game-ending ground out.
The Seahawks, which out-hit the Pioneers by a 7-3 count, were led by Mazurkiewicz, who went 2-for-3 with his team-leading sixth double and a run.
Adams (0-3) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, striking out five while allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over 5.1 solid innings. Stoddard (1-1) earned his first win of the year, striking out three while yielding one run on seven hits and a walk over 7.0 frames.
The teams will conclude their series with a single game at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
