Smithfield, RI - Bryant clipped Wagner 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Conaty Park while eliminating the Green & White in the race for a Northeast Conference (NEC) playoff berth. The Seahawks fall to 22-31 and 15-15 in the NEC while the Bulldogs improve to 31-21 and 22-8 in league play.
Sophomore RHP
Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the tough luck losing pitcher, falling to 4-4 on the year, despite recording his fifth complete game. Casey
fanned these four batters, while yielding three runs on eight hits and a walk over 6.0 strong innings.
Bryant RHP Craig Schlitter (6-6) earned the win, yielding one run on five hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.
Connor Carignan staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right field.
Wagner would fight back to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning. Graduate student
Bill Murphy (Cranford, NJ / Roselle Catholic / Rutgers) led off the frame by smoking
this double to right center. Following an out, senior
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica,CA / Notre Dame)
laced this RBI single, plating Murphy while tying the game up at 1-1. Junior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth (IA) CC) and sophomore
Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) followed with singles, while loading up the bases with just one out. Unfortunately, after a visit to the mound Schlitter induced an inning-ending double play grounder to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
Bryant would answer with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom part of the frame to reclaim the lead at 3-1. Kevin Brown plated Carignan with the go-ahead run with a double to right, before scoring on Jonathan Scott's single through the left side.
The Seahawks would strand a runner in each of the sixth and seventh innings, before falling by the aforementioned 3-1 score.
Six different members of the Green & White hit safely as Bryant was paced by Carignan (3-for-3, HR, 2 runs, 2B).
