Teaneck, NJ – Kyle Weeks' two-out RBI single to center field in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted Fairleigh Dickinson to a 4-3 win over Wagner in the series finale between the teams at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. In defeat, the Seahawks fall to 12-21 and 8-8 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Knights improve to 14-14-1 and 10-6 in the league.
FDU opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Matt Holsman's plated Ryan Kresky with a RBI single.
The Green & White immediately answered in the bottom part of the frame with three runs. Senior
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) led off with a double, before moving to third on junior
Nick Alfano's (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) sacrifice bunt. On the play, Alfano reached safely as the catcher made a play at third, only to have Higgins beat the throw.
Sophomore
Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) tied game up with a RBI ground out to short. Graduate student
Bill Murphy (Cranford, NJ / Roselle Catholic / Rutgers) followed with his first career home run, a mammoth blast that easily cleared the right field fence while giving Wagner a 3-1 lead.
Fairleigh Dickinson promptly tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom part of the inning on Ryan McDonald's RBI single and a Kresky sacrifice fly.
From that point on the pitching took over as Knight starter RHP Mike Eliasen faced just one over the minimum in the next five innings while scattering four runners. Eliasen was able to curtail the Seahawk rallies by inducing a pair of double plays and picking off a runner at first.
Green & White starter
Dan Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) was on top of his game while pitching his way out of trouble in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, with two outs and runners on second and third, the Garden State native threw behind JT Sherba at second, which led to Weeks getting picked off at third.
Then in the seventh with runners at first and second and two outs, Watson induced an inning-ending ground out against the Knights' No. 4 hitter, Eric Anderson. Watson would exit after a 1-2-3 eighth inning and finished up with two strikeouts over a career-best 8.0 innings, yielding three runs on nine hits and a pair of walks.
Freshman RHP
Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea) entered in the ninth and made quick work of FDU over the next two innings.
In the top of the 11th inning, Wagner strung together a two-out rally. Senior
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) was plunked for the second time, before
Jayson Keel (Jr., Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) smacked his second hit of the game. Unfortunately, the pair would be stranded when Eliasen got pinch hitter
Cliff Brantley (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) for the final out of the frame.
After Battaglia set FDU down in order, the Seahawks again threatened in the top of the 12th inning. With one out, Alfano crushed a double off the right field fence, before Miller followed with a single through the right side. However, on the play Alfano was thrown out trying to score. After Miller stole second, Eliasen induced Murphy into an inning-ending line out.
In the bottom of the frame, Kresky reached on a bloop single. After Eliasen walked, Weeks hit a single to center field and Miller's throw to the plate was slightly off line, allowing Kresky to score the winning run.
Eight different members of the Green & White batted safely en route to recording 12 hits for the game. Alfano led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run. Miller recorded his team-best 10th multi-hit game, going 2-for-6 with two stolen bases and a RBI while Keel notched his eighth multi-hit game, finishing up 2-for-5.
Battaglia (1-1) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding one run on three hits and a pair of walks over 3.2 innings.
Kresky paced Fairleigh Dickinson, which also recorded 12 hits, finishing up 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
Eliasen (5-1) went the distance, striking out six while allowing three runs on 12 hits over 12.0 innings of work.
Wagner is at Seton Hall on Wednesday, April 11 with first pitch slated for 3:30 pm.
