Box Score / Box Score (PDF)

New Britain, CT -
Central Connecticut State held off a late-charging Wagner squad by a 7-4 count in the second game of a doubleheader at the CCSU Baseball Field. The Seahawks, which won game one by a 5-2 count, fall to 19-26 and 12-11 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Blue Devils improve to 22-21 and 14-13 in the league.

Despite trailing 7-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Green & White would not go down without a fight. Freshman Mitchell Dressing (Beachwood, NJ / Toms River South) drew a lead-off walk, before classmate Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) laced this single. Sophomore Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) followed with this single, loading up the bases with no outs. Senior Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) then plated Dressing with this RBI single, trimming the deficit to 7-3 while chasing CCSU LHP Cody Brown from the game. Wagner would get one more run across, but get no closer in falling 7-4.

Higgins and Gordon each notched two hits while also recording RBI singles to lead an eight-hit Wagner attack.

The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on Dylan DelaCruz's RBI triple, before adding another run on Josh Ingham's RBI single to right field.

CCSU extended the lead out to 3-0 with a Jake Matuszak sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Seahawks got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of one-out hits. Dressing doubled to left center, before coming around to score on this Gordon RBI single to left center.

In the bottom part of the frame, the Blue Devils responded with four runs on five hits in opening up what would prove to be an insurmountable 7-1 advantage.

Junior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) helped to get one of those runs back in the top of the sixth inning. After lacing this triple to right center, the Green & White right fielder would come around to score on a Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Wagner would plate two more runs in the top of the seventh to provide the final 7-4 ledger.

DelaCruz led an 11-hit CCSU offense, going 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles, three runs and two RBI.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a single, nine-inning game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
