Coming Off Consecutive One-Goal Losses, Men’s Lax Looks For First Win At Mercer Today At 1 PM

LIVE STATS

MACON, GA –
The Wagner men's lacrosse team, which is coming off one-goal losses to Saint Joseph's (6-5) and at VMI (12-11, OT), has played a competitive brand of lacrosse this season under first-year coach Matt Poskay and are in search of their first win of the season today at Mercer in a 1:00 pm faceoff.

Like Wagner, Mercer enters today's contest at Bear Field in search of its first victory of the 2012 campaign. The Seahawks slipped to 0-6 in their visit to the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, in dropping that 12-11 overtime tilt at VMI on Tuesday. Wagner is led by junior midfielder Nick DePhillips (Glen Ridge, NJ/ Glen Ridge), who has a team-leading 12 goals and 12 points. Fellow junior midfielder Colin O'Rourke (Worecester,, MA/ St.John's Shrewsbury) also comes into the match with 12 points this season for the Seahawks, having reached that total with 10 goals and a pair of assists.

The Bears are in the midst of their second season in program history, and will be looking to put an end to an 11-game losing streak when they take the field against the Seahawks. Today's meeting between Mercer and Wagner will mark the first in the series between the two programs on the lacrosse field.

After dropping an 8-6 contest at home to Manhattan on Tuesday, Mercer enters today's fray with a record of 0-8. Mercer sophomore attackman Zack Ward was again impressive in the loss to Manhattan as he helped the Bears mount a furious rally in the late stages, only to fall just short in the end. Ward, who tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season, was part of a fourth-quarter surge that saw the Bears find the back of the net twice and pull within striking distance of the visiting Jaspers.

Since transferring to Mercer from Salisbury University, Ward has found the net with regularity, scoring in all eight games for the Bears this season. In total, Ward has amassed a team-leading 18 points this season, adding seven assists to his team-leading goals total.
