Queens, NY - St. John's broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning on its way to a 13-4 win over Wagner in non-conference action at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Seahawks had their chances in the early going but left nine runners on base in falling to 8-17 on the year wihle the Red Storm improves to 14-12.
Freshman
Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) led the way for the Green & White, going 2-for-4 while senior
Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) was 1-for-2 with two hit-by-pitches while extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Also recording his hitting streak to 11 games was senior
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy), who was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Despite not batting safely, senior
Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) drew three walks.
Junior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen))
led the game off with this home run to left field, marking the second-straight game that Brown has began a game with a long ball as Wagner has now dented the scoreboard in the first inning in each of its last six games. The Seahawks continued to threaten as Boyd walked before McDonnell was hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, the pair would be unable to score as Anthony Cervone evaded further damage.
St. John's responded with three runs in the bottom part of the frame. Jimmy Brennan led off with a triple after the Green & White outfield lost the ball in the overcast sky. Following a walk, Matt Wessinger stole second and on the errant throw Brennan came around to score. Joe Panik put the Red Storm up 3-1 with a two-run home run to right center. Freshman
Matt Gavin (St. James, NY / Smithtown East) then settled down in striking out the side highlighted by his
second and
third punchouts.
After loading the bases with one out and failing to score in the top of the second inning, Wagner broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
McDonnell led off with this bunt single before
Higgins followed with an infled single of his own. Following a force out, freshman
Cliff Brantley (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond)
delivered a RBI single to left field, plating McDonnell while advancing Conforti to third base. Sophomore
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) then tied the game up with a sacrifice fly to deep center, plating Conforti while tying the game up at 3-3.
Unfortunately, from that point on it was all St. John's as Wagner could only manage three hits over the final six innings while the Red Storm erupted for 10-straight runs in buidling an insurmountable 13-3 lead.
The Seahawks capped the scoring in the top of hte ninth inning when freshman
Dave Pepe (Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) notched his first collegiate hit before coming around to score on a pass ball later in the frame, providing the final 13-4 tally.
Gavin (0-1) struck out four while yielding six runs on four hits and five walks over 4.0 innings of work.
Leading the way for the Red Storm was Brennan, who went 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, three runs and three RBI, and Panik, who was 3-for-4 with home run, double five RBI and two runs.
Stephen Rivera (2-2) struck out two over 3.0 innings of one-hit ball in recording the victory.
Wagner is next in action on Friday, April 8 at 3:00 pm when the Seahawks host Bryant in the first of four games.
