Brooklyn NY -
After falling in the final frame in yesterday's second game Wagner left nothing to chance, pounding Long Island 11-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at the LIU Field. In victory, the Seahawks improve to 8-15 and 6-5 in the Northeast Conference while the Blackbirds fall to 12-11 and 4-3 in the league.

The Green & White scored 11 runs on 13 hits as all nine starters hit safely, led by Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms). The fifth-year senior went 3-for-4 with a home run, double, career-high six RBI and two stolen bases. On the mound, fellow fifth-year senior RHP Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) did his part, improving to 3-2 with his third-straight win. Hering spun his first career shutout, striking out a career-best matching eight while limiting LIU to just four hits over 7.0 strong innings.

Wagner scored in the first inning for the fourth-straight game with a single run. Junior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) led off with this single up the middle before stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out. McDonnell then began his big day with this RBI single to right field, plating Brown.

After the Blackbirds squandered a first-and-third one out situation in the bottom of the second inning, the Seahawks plated five runs in the top of the third while for all intents and purposes putting the game out of reach.

With one out, Brown drew a walk before moving to second on this Seth Boyd single. On the ensuing play, McDonnell crushed this 2-2 offering over the right field fence, plating Brown and Seth Boyd (Sr., Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) while extending the lead out to 4-0. Senior Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) followed with this double to left field before senior Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) delivered this single while moving Lucas to third. Junior Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) followed with this RBI single that scored Lucas before senior Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) capped the scoring with this run-scoring single, chasing home Conforti in the process. All told the Green & White plated five runs while sending 11 batters to the plate en route to building a 6-0 lead.

After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Wagner added five runs while again batting around in the fifth inning. After going in front 7-0 when Boyd walked with the bases loaded, McDonnell picked up RBIs five and six with a double to left field. The Seahawks capped the scoring with a Lucas RBI ground out and a Higgins RBI double to center field, pushing the lead out to 11-0.

LIU threatened in the bottom part of the frame, loading up the bases but was unable to do any damage before Hering capped his fine performance by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Joining McDonnell with big games was Brown (3 runs), Higgins (2-4; 2 RBI) and Hunter (2-4).

Sophomore RHP Justin Topa (3-4) assumed the loss, yielding 10 runs on 11 hits over 4.0 innings.

NOTES:
The shutout was the second of the season for Wagner pitching and the first complete game shutout since Lucas struck out 10 in a 2-0 win over Long Island back on March 27, 2010 ... In that game, Topa was also the pitcher of record for the Blackbirds ... Hering improves to 2-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA over 14.0 innings for his career against LIU ... Last year, he led the Seahawks to a 3-0 win over the Blackbirds in the series finale between the teams ... Boyd and McDonnell each extended their hitting streaks to nine in the victory while Hunter pushed his to eight.
