BOX SCORE
Staten Island, NY - Mount St. Mary's scored five times in the top of the third en route to a 6-3 victory over Wagner in the series finale at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 7-8 and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 3-12 and 2-2 in the NEC.
On offense, the duo of senior
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) and sophomore
Gaby Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) led the way for the Green & White. Boyd notched his team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the year with a 2-for-5 performance while adding two stolen bases. Ramirez, meanwhile, extended his hitting streak to five games, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Wagner did manage nine hits but could only manage one run in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings while leaving 10 runners on base.
Mount St. Mary's struck for the first five runs of the game in the top of the third inning while sending 10 batters to the plate.
The Seahawks finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior
Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) got the rally going with a one-out single through the right side. Ramirez followed with a single to left field, pushing Conforti to second. Senior
Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) then crushed a double to left center, plating Conforti while pushing Ramirez to third. Unfortunately that would be it for the Green & White as Ramirez was thrown out at the plate on the ensuing play trying to score on a fly out to right field.
Wagner added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) led off with a sharp single up the middle before stealing second with one out. Following a walk to Conforti, Ramirez singled up the middle scoring McDonnell while moving Conforti to third. On the next play, Rice crushed a line drive that unfortunately was right at the second baseman before Mount St. Mary's starter RHP Max Brittenham induced an inning-ending ground out.
The Mountaineers got one of those runs back in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, senior
Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) doubled down the left field line before being lifted for a pinch runner. After freshman
Dave Pepe (Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) moved to third on a wild pitch, McDonnell drew a four-pitch walk. Junior
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Pepe while moving McDonnell into scoring position. Unfortunately, that is where he would be stranded as Brittenham induced an inning-ending fly out.
That would be it for the Seahawk offense as Mount St. Mary's retired six of the final seven batters he faced en route to a complete game, 142-pitch performance. The fifth-year senior improves to 1-1 while scattering three runs on nine hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Junior
Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) was the tough-luck loser, surrendering five runs - all of which were yielded in the third inning - on 10 hits and a pair of walks over 5.0 innings.
The bullpen tandem of sophomore RHP
Dakota Dvorak (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep) and senior LHP
David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier) were outstanding, striking out five while yielding just one run over the final 4.0 innings. Dvorak struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning with every batter going down via the backward's K while Rees retired all five batters he faced. For the weekend, he went 1-0 with a save over three games while striking out four, against just two hits, over 5.2 innings.
All nine Mountaineer starters hit safely, recording a total of 14 hits, and were led by Zach Helman (2-3, 2 RBI).
Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, March 23 at home against Lafayette with first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
